does anyone know what exact powder is in the winchester supreme 150 gr. ballistic tip in a 300 wsm? out of all the loads Ive tried I can't seem to beat the accuracy of these factory loads, I would like to copy them if I can. I've used h4350, rl19,w760 and the closest was the w760.

Most powder companies use a special blend or I think its called "Data" powder (someone correct me if I am wrong) 760 is a great powder give Accurate Arms powder a try http://www.accuratepowder.com/

Most of it is hit and miss (no pun intended) you will find a powder load that will beat the factory load just takes some tinkering.

It seems to be a mixture, sometimes they buy powders from other companies, even if they do have powder manufacture of themselves, just to keep performance at preciese level.

As far as I know, RWS makes powder, but also blends Norma and Vhiavuori powders.

A nice thing to have a laboratory and some pressure measuring guns!

I found years ago, that what is in the factory ammo, youjust came seem to pin down what it is and you can't always buy it.

I found this with 30-06 and 308 both Winchester factory ammo. I took the powder out of them, weigh the powder and try them in some other cartridges. They really didn't act like what I thought they were. One gave me a surprise.

I use W748 these days, RL19, 4198, 4064 and Norma Magnum powder for these bigger cases. I use the 748, 4198, H335, 3031 and BL-C(2) for my 223, 7 TCU, 221 Fireball, 30-30 and few others.

For pistol rounds, I use W231, Unique and 2400 depending in the cartridge and the bullets.

I don't take old/salvage cartridges apart any more for the powder, I just salvage the brass and the bullets. The powder goes out in the drive way with a fuse and a match. I have a septic system so I won't flush the stuff, like I did when I lived on the city.

Don't think you'll be able to nail down the exact powder they use. I have read that they blend their powders to get exactly what they want. You and I cannot purchase that powder. We are limited to canister powder. The best way to duplicate the factory load is to shoot it in your gun and find out what the velocity actually is in your gun (must use a chrony) and then find a powder that will duplicate that velocity in your gun with that bullet.
