I've used Imperial and lee (diluted) case lube for a long time, but I've always wondered what effect the neck lube has on the bullet seating when fired. It just seems as tho the Inside of the case neck would be fairly slick from the lube . We wipe off the outside of our cases but not the inside of the neck. I lube every other neck and it works ok.

Hi, I used to use Lee case lube on the the inside of the necks and clean it off with a qtip before I dropped the charge but I recently bought a Lyman Neck Dipper with white mica powder and it leaves nothing after sizing, its great.

when neck sizing i usually use moly powder.nothing to clean off because it is dry.before anyone asks about not enough" bullet pull",whaddaya think moly coated bullets do?your expander has the most effect.

I shoot some bottle-neck pistol calibers, most notably the .44 WCF and .357 Sig. While I don't lube inside the case neck on the .44's, I do lube them on the Sig. I use the RCBS "gooey" lube (the one that smells like pine sap), their green case lube pad, and their little bottle brush/green screwdriver handle combo. The little brush deposits so tiny an amount inside the case mouth that it's virtually invisible under inspection, yet it eases the sizing process noticebly - particularly the exit of the expander ball on the downstoke, which no longer seizes up or squeaks. Bullet seating does not seem to be affected.
The case neck on the .44 WCF is quite a bit longer, so a slight flare of the case mouth works for getting the bullet aligned for seating, and the expander ball is on a separate die (the .357 Sig die set is only a 2-er). The cases still need to be outside lubed, but the spray-on lubes work fine for them, whereas they (the spray-ons) are useless on the .357 Sig brass.

For the inside of the neck I use Mica dust as a lube.

I have tried several different things for inside neck lubing;
Graphite powder, RCBS Case Lube applied with a brush, Lyman mica powder applied by the brush mounted in the Lyman case lube station, and Imperial Wax, applied by just rubbing with my finger over the case mouth;
For me, the Imperial and RCBS work the best, using mica powder I still have to use more power to pull the sizing ball through the neck,which means to me, I am stretching the cases more than necessary.

Paul, That is a very good point that I hadn't thought of! And that, gentlemen, is the very reason I frequent this site. Thanks Paul. RD

Afterwards I always tumble my brass, I want it as shiny as possible because my hunting is mostly done at times there is not very much light and a shiny case is found a lot easier, as already stated before, and all the lube will be removed.
Important to me is after the tumbling to clean the outside of the cases with a soft clean piece of cloth to remove the polishing powder wich otherwise also will polish the chamber of my rifle and the inside of my dies
The only thing I would like to find a cure for is avoiding the annoying removal of media out of 99% of the flash-holes .

| In the 70's I asked that question of my gun club friends and they told me to use graphite . I just read information on the Surplus Rifle site about a really inexpensive interior & exterior case lube G B Wire-Aid it's a wire pulling lubricant part# 79-006 $5/quart like graphite it won't contaminate powder so sayeth the article! http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/brasstrimming/index.asp Last edited on 31 August 2008 05:39 PM by sako06

I agree with Paul Tummers. There is way too much drag on the case neck with the mica , etc, powders. I guess the best way to prevent the variation of the bullet resistance is just wipe the necks out with alcohol after lube. It is all pretty nit picking, but you have to eliminate all the voodoo - gremlins involved in this shooting game. As far as moly bullets, the first one would be as slick as the last one, no variation.
