I know some primers are "hotter" than others, but what effects, if any do these typically have on muzzle velocity and/or pressures? I'm interested in magnum primers. I usually use Fed 215 with my 300 UM and 300 SAUM loads, but recently fired identically powder charges using CCI magnum primers and experienced a higher average fps, but also more inconsistent chrono readings. Obviously I've never experimented much with various primers.
I appreciate any input. Thanks
Kevin

You will just have to experiment to find those answers. When ever I work up a load, I always run a primer series to find which primer gives me the best group.
The results can be surpriseing. Because of these test the Remington 9 1/2 has become my favorite large rifle primer and the Remington 6 1/2 usually gives me the best groups.
However I don't use the 6 1/2 much anymore because of the problems with some lots blowing a pin hole in the radius on the bottom of the primer. This sends a hot jet of gas onto your bolt face and removes a divot of metal.

I must say, I never ever have been thinking much about the differences in primers of different brands- I am lucky already when I can get primers at all, which means mostly CCI for me!
Same goes for different brands of powder; I am doomed to stay on using Vithavuori and limited Accurate powders, and be happy with it-because this is what is available.

| I know what you mean by limited choices Paul. I can only get 4 varieties of Remington, Winchester, CCI, Federal, Wolf and Chedite primers.

| Thanks for the input. I've never tried Remington 91/2's, just Federal 215 and CCI. I'll run some of my own tests and see what difference it makes.

I cant find any 210's or 210M's and WLR's are getting higher. I did find a few cases of 215's for $36 a thousand so i grabbed them up to either use or barter. I dont load any magnums but i do have a 338 federal and since Varget fills the case capacity at below max levels i figure a good mag primer might be in order to ignite the stuff.

Here is the reference to the page on primers:

$36.00 a carton of primers, I have recently purchased mine for about $25 a carton of a thousand. I take the ones that I want to store and put them in Reynolds Vacuum bags, suck the air out and put them in storage.

I have run many series of test with all the primers I can acquire. What I have found is that some powders give the best group with a mild primer while others like hot primers.
And it does not follow any pattern. 2230 likes a mild primer eventhough it is a ball powder. Several other ball powders I have tried like mild primers.
Basically after you run your powder ladder you just need to run a primer series to get the smallest group. That is part of the fun of reloading.
Just do scientific experimentation, keep good records and shoot a big enough sample to be statistically siginificant.
