Hey all
I have been doing a little shooting with my stock iron sighted M-1 Garand and find that groups get iffy at 600 yards (target disapars after sec's) and at 500 meters (taregt doubles after afew sec's) I have been told how to over come the optical illulion prob's.
My groups at these distance's has been opening up more then the cone of fire says it should have been useing m-2 ball and have been told the light bullets many time just loose acracy at long distance , So I am looking at loading up some 168 gr hornady match hpbt and imr or hogdon 4895 that I have around to see if its me or the ammo.
Have case head space gauge calipers rcbs full leagth dies primer pocet uniformer primer pocet cleaner brass tumbler camfer tool primer pocket swagger
If memory serves me right reduce loads by 2 grains for milsurp brass?
have a little over 2000 greek brass and over 1500 korean and over 1000 yugoslav
Said rifle is able to shoot under 2 m.o.a so its not the rifle ,,advice idea's ?
I am finding out just how far this rifle can shoot after working up a load and useing it
I will find out the gr wt of the old AP rounds and use some of them that I have to see how far the rifle was limeted to back in its hetday if any one know the wt of the old ap bullets PLEASE let me know.
Thank You
Wade

Wade.. I weighed 10 M2AP bullets, average= 162.8gr.
Barnes Cartridges of the World says this bullet weighs 166-7.5gr, with a powder charge of IMR 4895/55gr, with a pressure of 54,000psi max avg. Velocity is 2715 plus or minus 30fps @ 78ft.
Just for info-- M2 ball, 152-3gr uses IMR 4895/50gr, pressure-50,000psi max avg. Vel is 2740 plus or minus 30fps @ 78ft.
The old M72 match w/ 175.5-3gr. also uses IMR4895/50gr, 50Kpsi. Vel-2640 plus or minus 30fps @ 78ft.
If you have an Accurate Powder Co. loading manual, it has competition loads for Garands using Speer Match bullets. I tried some AA2520 powder which works very well in my almost stock International Harvester. Had to have it re-barreled because the Koreans that had it must have used valve grinding compound to clean the original barrel. No rifling for the last 10 inches of the bore. Keyholed M2 ball at 35 yards. The rest of the rifle was mechanically excellent.
Good shooting .

Im still learning the last gruops i did where in near perfact condisions wind from 6 oclock to 12 oclock light wind late after noon myself in the shade sunlight on targets target standerd d prone time less then 2 minets 10 shots on each target 400 meter and 500 meter out of posable 50 points on each 40 points on 400 meter dropped to 28 on 500 meter, it does not add up in the cone of fire ,miaght be ammo miaght be me and the optical illsion of the target doubleing after afew secs.
I think next time I will just shoot at 500 meters and slow down a little give my eyes time to rest and keep hold of npoa .
O ye shooting done from prone with loopsling GI web sling nothen our GI's did not have back then ammo was surpluse yugoslavain M-2 ball.
btw I make my liveing driveing truck I get around abit finding that sometimes to be an advantage ie defrant rifle range's to shoot at when I have the time

| If you intend to do a lot of shooting with your M1 Garand, purchase a McCaan gas system. It reduces the pounding of the op rod, wheather military, or handloads are used.Check out their website.Best $30 I ever spent! Last edited on 1 October 2008 10:54 PM by c1a1

| Thanks for the info ,I've seen this site before and told others about their garand mods that can be used for BIG game.(I lost my info when my PC got hammered by a virus) I wish I had it in the '80's when I was doing so much garand shooting.I've stopped using the M1 since I have several other rifles.I contacted http://www.northridgeinc.com and bought a nm operating rod and spring.I also added an Amega Ranges rail for a scope mount in case I decide to take it out hunting for deer or pigs now that nosler is making nonlead 30 cal E-Tip bullets in 150 & 180gr that has to be used in the condor zone.I killed a mule deer buck with my garand in colorado.
