I just received a product recall bulletin from Hodgdon Powder Company, 6231 Robinson, Shawnee Mission, KS 66202. It says, "Hodgdon Powder Company announces a product recall of H4227 one-pound container LOT 10328054230.
Hodgdon warns that it has determined that a small number of one-pound bottles of a small lot number of H4227 smokeless powder packaged on March 31, 2005 contain Hodgdom H4198 instead of H4227 powder.

"Use of recalled H4227 when loaded in cartridges and/or shotshells using standard loading data can cause a low pressure, unsafe condition, which could cause a projectile to becometo become lodged in a firearm barrel, which upon firing of a subsequent l oad, may cause personal injury to the user and/or bystand and damage tot he fire arm.

"Recalled H4227 users should immediately cease using this product and contact Hodgdon Powder Company Inc. for return instructions at 1-800-622-4366 or 913-362-9455. Hodgdon will send out a D.O.T. approved return carton and replacement of the product at no cost.

"For more information about the H4227 product recall contact Hodgdon Powder Company by fax 913 362 1307, by e-mail --help@hodgdon.com."

You also cart write to them at the address above.

If you are a handloader and have bought H4227 since March 31, 2005. please check the lot number on the container. If you have some of this recalled powder, contact Hodgdon Powder Company immediately.

Since I've been discussing powder, this might be a good spot to mention a relatively now Digital Powder Scale by Lyman. The Lyman DPS 1200 scale is probably one of the most accurate automatic powder scales on the market. I tested one extensively, and it proved accurate to the one-tenth of a grain.

I won't go into a lot of detail about the Lyman 1200 except to say it can store up to 20 powder weights that can be recalled. Let's say you load a lot of your Remington 50-grain bullet 22-250 ammo with 35 grain of Hodgdon's VARGET You enter the data naming the cartridge, powder brand and exact weight into the scale's memory. Any time this loaded is needed, it can be recalled instantly, and. the scale will meter it out to the exact tenth of a grain.

Since the scale can store up to 20 different charge weights, there is no need for a special notebook or trying to remember which reloading manual the load came from. Simply push "recall" and scroll through the charge weights until you come to the one needed. Push "enter" and the scale is ready to dump the exact weight into the scale's powder pan. In fact, as the weight builds in the pan, it can be seen on the digital readout on the scale.

The Lyman 1200 digital scale is not for speed reloading. It meters the powder into the pan at a medium rate. I didn't mind the wait, since the powder charge was accurately weighed and pushing enter after dumping the pan started the scale.

In the early days of handloading, powder charges were weighed on a set of "balances." Believe me, this was slow. The beam-type scale reigned for years and is still popular. However, the digital scales are sophisticated and accurate. The beam scale may go with the apple butter kettle and plunger-type butter churn.
