for the sake of friendly disagreeing.. I said in my earlier post that unless u hit a deer in the heart, it is likely to run forever before it bleeds out and goes down.  I did not say miss and watch them run. 

line up 10 people and probably 8 of them would say not to use .223 in larger than varmit hunting.  Most states make it illegal to shoot deer with .223.. I own an AR and love it but would not use it for deer hunting.  Being from Texas I would say I have seen some whitetail deer not much larger than a jack rabbit and could be considered a varmit.
