I am building up my first AR and am waiting for my 16" A4 varmint upper to come in. The barrel is chambered in .223 Wylde with a 1/8 twist. I plan on mostly loading 60gr+ bullets for this rifle and may use it to deer hunt. I know most dont suggest using .223 for deer hunting, but I plan on keeping my shots under 100yrds for deer. My question is what would be a good powder for 60gr+ bullets in a 16 in barrel? I am thinking IMR3031, Varget, or W748? I am possibly leaning towards IMR3031 since it has the faster burn rate.

Sorry, I can't help you with deer loads, but in my RRA, I like Benchmark and Varget, but I shoot mainly paper and PD's when I get a chance.
I'm assuming you are getting an RRA upper, since I am not aware of anyone else making a Wylde chamber. I love mine, and I bet you will like yours quite a bit too.
Hope you find something that works well for you.

Yes it is the RRA A4 Varmint upper in the 16" barrel. What RRA do you have? I am hoping I didnt make a wrong choice by not choosing an 18 or 20" barrel. I chose the 16" purely on weight factor. I figure I might lose about 150 fps.

There is a bunch of powders I would use before 3031. It has a very long grain and is a bear to run through a normal powder measure.
Here is a list 4895, Varget, 748, Reloader 15, N140, 2230, 2015, Ball C2, H335, Bench Mark and TAC.
I am sure there are others. Note: 4198 is not on the list as it will not always make an AR run. Burn rate is too fast.

Well I went to Cabela's this weekend and bought a new Rock Chucker, small base dies for .223, and scads of other reloading stuff. They didn't have anything as far as primers or powder except for the last pound of IMR4895 which I snagged. I think I am going to have to start ordering online and having it delivered to the store, because they show to have things in stock if you order offline.
I also got some Hornady V-Max 55 gr and some Sierra 69gr match kings. So we will have to see how those work with the IMR4895.

You will really like the Match Kings. I even do some Varmit hunting with them.
Have Fun,

I have used w748 in others and it does flow well.you might try a standard die set first.if the chamber is generous enough it will save wear and tear on the brass.

Try the standard size die first or borrow some from a friend, to see if the sized cases fit the chamber. I had a friend whose Model 70 in 223 the chamber was tighter than the small dies could do, so we sent several factory cases that had been fired with the dies back to RCBS and they returned a set of dies that worked. I think was something like $20 involved.
For a 63gr bullet, the w748 load would be 25 grains
For a 69gr bullet, the w748 load would be 24.5 grains.
You should back these loads off by at least 10% and work you way yo what works for you. All of the standard disclaimers apply.
I have heard a couple of people in NC hunt deer a Mini 14 and do well each season.
Have fun,
Jerry

Well I hope I didnt make a mistake by getting the small base die set. The upper I ordered is chambered in .223 Wylde. Oh well, I guess it doesnt hurt to have them. If you get a chance go check out my posting in the learning to reload section about case head space gauges. Last edited on Wed Mar 18th, 2009 10:18 PM by RemMan700

I have many, many dies sets for rounds I haven't loaded or cartridges I have used in 20 to 30 years.
They are always handy to have on hand.

I don't have an AR but I've always had very good luck with Varget in my 22-250, .204 Ruger and my .308.
It meters well and seems consistent batch to batch and isn't as temperature sensitive as some powders.
IMR & WIN are now part of Hodgdon I understand.

I don't think it is a mistake to have a small base die for every caliber you reload for.
Every once in a while you run across a case that will just not surrender to a standard die.

I keep my small diaes around for the sometimes difficult pieces of brass, but my M1A requires the small base dies on the brass for it, while my Rem 700 in .308 doesn't. My Spanish FR8 does seem to really case which dies I use, it just shoots.

i wouldnt hunt deer with a .223. i load Sierra 69 gr. HPBT with 25 gr of BLC 2. Nice groups at 200 yds. anyway.. tons of loads out there but I have settled on the BLC load. I shoot a STAG 1/9.. love it with a monarch nikon red dot or a 3X9 40mm Nikon prostaff.

I have shoot the 223 cartridge in many forms for around 40 years or so. I wouldn't use it for deer hunting. A good hit that isn't fatal is cruelty to an animal. I know the power of the cartridge and it isn't good for some hunting.

Our soldiers hunt the most dangerous game on earth with it. I have done the same and found it entirely satisfactory.

good point; however the enemy do not run like deer and jump ten foot fences when the shot is not in the heart and they are wounded. the enemy usually take 3 shot bursts or auto. bambi's mom or dad can run full out for miles if wounded and maybe not be found.

I disagree. I have shot at people and missed and it appears they can run a 2 minute mile. Run through fences. Clear rivers in a single bound and disappaer into thin air.
And on top of that they have friends with them that will try to kill you.
