My best friend who was a comp shooter for over 10 years and gunsmith and my lean on for reloading know how absolutely hates cci primers and basically dared me to buy them (local shop has about 30,000).
whats everyones opinion on them?

I've burned up a lot of CCI primers, and some of my milsurp rifles need CCI's milspec primers to prevent slamfires. I have never had a problem with them they are consistant and reliable. What more does one need?
Granted, most of my primers now outside of the milspec primers are Winchester.
My question would be why does your buddy dislike CCI primers. Has he had a negative experience personally, or does he not like them because somebody else told him they had a bad experience?

In 30 years I exclusively used CCI primers, never had a problem with them.
Just like powders, primer brands are limited over here, the alternative would be Federal primers, but I do feel no need to change.
I once bought a thousand so-called bench rest rifle primers, which afterwards proved to be a waist of money because their standard primers are so good, there hardly was any difference in performance .

i use cci in all my handguns. 17 firearms; pushing close to 20 cartridges using both rifle and pistol primers; standard and magnum varieties ... i've never been disappointed with the results.
the way supply is nowadays, if there's a need, i'd certainly make a purchase. they're a good primer.

CCI pistol primers are supposed to have a little harder cup than some others and would only possibly cause a problem in handguns with lightened trigger pulls, hammer springs, or modifications that would cause less of a firing pin force. I've used them in stock revolvers and autos for years without a misfire. They are good primers. Just like any primer, seat them correctly and you'll have no problems with CCI. I regularly load for and shoot .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, and 300 Win Mag Rifles. I also load and shoot .44 magnum and .357 magnum handguns. I have tried Winchester, CCI and Federal in both standard and magnum in all brands. Whenever I work up a new load, I shoot from a bench over a chronograph. In every single instance - 100% of the time - CCI has given the best group size and the lowest standard deviation (most consistent). When loading top end loads, CCI usually gives highest velocities. Winchester is a close second in handgun loads.

Here's my take on it.
Say you hate Ford cars. Everyone one in your neighborhood drives a Ford car or truck, and they have never had a problem. The fella across the street from you has 500,000 new Ford cars. Would you try to talk to everyone that you know, and tell them how much you hate Ford cars?
Hating a primer for the sake of hating a primer is pretty foolish. Does he have a reason for 'slamming' on CCI primers? Maybe it wasn't the primer that failed him, maybe he accidentally got some oil on a box and decided to use them anyway(of course they aren't going to work){I can admit to doing this same thing at least once in my life}.
I absolutely love the consistency I get from the CCI BR-series, both large and small! I would put them up against a Federal Match primer any day.

Buy what ever you can get. But if CCI is the choice there is nothing wrong with that. I have used CCI for at least 10 years exclusively and never had a problem.
I had to buy Winchester small and large rifle primes recently, because that is all they would have for at least 6 weeks. I have never used Winchester but I feel confident they will do fine.
The shortage hype on all components is not hype, it is serious ! Especially here in South Texas.

I use more CCI primers than any other brand.Small Rifle,Large Rifle, LR mag, small pistol and large pistol primers.
The only other brand that comes close to as much as I use is Federal primers.I like their 210 LR match primers and their 215 magnum primers.
Why does he dislike CCI so much??
Heck I have never had a problem with a CCI primer.

In the mid 60's I would buy a lot of CCI small rifle primers, I Stopped when I had more misfire and hang fires. I haven't bought any since, you know the old saying "once bitten, twice shy". They might be the best thing to day you can buy, I'll never know, as I won't buy any.
The best primer to date I have found are the Wolf brand. This goes for all the cases I load and reload.
Just my two cents!

I have all of the different brand primers on my bench and the CCI work as well as any other brand. I wouldn't hesitate to use CCI primer for any of my loading and i have been loading since 1970. I started with CCI primers and still use them. I'm very demanding in load quality and believe me if they where bad i wouldn't still be using them.

Good, I'm glad they work for you. I was and old hand at loading ammo by 1970. I started in the late 1950's. I'm still trying t figure out what that is suppose to mean?
And what do you think that phrase "just my two cents" means?

i like cci's,federals, remington, etc.if supply & demand is a problem i'll buy any of them and work up a load for the primer being used.if demand is not an issue i'll use cci's.if i feel i need a hot primer i'll use a remington mag rifle primer, just my opinion,if i want consistency i'll use a cci primer, also just an opinion.like the br primers also in my 221

I have a Saiga .308, an AK-47 type rifle that has a 16" barrel with a 1:12 twist. I have only found CCI Magnum primers at a local Gun store when I started loading for it a couple of weeks ago. CCI 250. I have used them in all the loads as I could ONLY find 5 boxes (500) of LR primers, and they happen to be the 250 CCI primers. I have spherical powders, like BLC-2 and extruded like H322, Varget, etc. I use these primers for all of the loads I have worked on, starting at the bottom. Have not seen any excessive pressure signs.
Now, a local Gun store has some Large Rifle primers, NOT magnum. I hesitate to buy them as they only sell a case (1000 ea) at a time, and they are not the Magnum primers I need for spherical based powders. Do I really gain anything by going to a regular LR primer for the extruded powders of the magnum primers?
I have had great success with CCI, nothing to complain about here!!Last edited on Sat Sep 19th, 2009 05:33 AM by Darth AkSarBen
