Folks,
I am not old, but todays prices on powder, primers, etc are high and will probably stay high. They may come down some but not to pre Obama pricing, that is the way you make profit.
As mentioned in another posting, pricing was pretty flat for many years, then the Klintons came to power and the prices went up, and stayed up.
I could buy a pound of most powders for about $10.00, many times less if I bought bulk. Back when powder came in metal canisters, I could pick up an 8 pounder for $60 to $70. A carton primers for $10.00. Wheel weights were about 30 cents a pound and that was a little pricey for that time.
When my kids were young and at home, we used to spend Saturday crusing the gun shows for deals. I would buy brass from the ads in Shotgun News. I bought military once fired 38 Spl brass, 4 for a penny. That was in the early 80s.
It was nothing for me to buy 44 Mag brass in the 1K packages, it used to be in the late 80s going for about 1/3 of current prices.
In the mid 70s I bought Greek reloaded 8mm Mauser ammo for about a penny around if I bought a 50 gallon drum full.
In 1987, I bought 4 CF battle packs of 7.62 NATO ammo for $100, that included shipping. What is ammo going for these days.
I saved up money to buy good equipment, I have one orginal Dillon 550 that has been up graded a few times, and another 550 that I bought shortly after that. I had my Rock Chucker years before that.
My first new car was a 1966 Chevy Impala, what I paid for it is nothing compared to todays prices. gasoline was 20 cents a gallon of leaded regular and high test was 25 cents.
Pricing is up and it will probably stay up.
If you are a lucky patriot, if you are a reservist, guardsman or regular military in an air assualt unit, you can probably bag your 7.62 NATO brass and take it home to reload. I used to get brass that way, I would sell the links at gun shows and shoot the occasional live round that was ejected into the bag.
Reloaders are resourceful people, we should start to build a supply network or a buying coop.

I'm right there with you. I paid $55 plus tax for a box of 1000 CCI 450 small rifle magnum primers. Ouch. I considered buying a couple more boxes but figured that these prices...and availability has to come down some time soon.
I am willing to trade some .223 Rem brass for primers and/or powder. Also have .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 9mm, 38 Special brass.

hmmm prices ...since the metal hi spot of a couple of years ago they surely are alot higher ! i wont say what i see primers selling for erm rather being offered for .. last ones i bought the guy wanted $40 a brick ..end of gun show he was willing to sell them for 30 and i was willing to buy for that ,my first brick i never thought i'd use all of them or if i did it would take forever the price was $11,i'm not against a person making a profit but i surely dont want to be some guy's mark of the week ,i honestly dont recall what my first powder cost ,but yes the 6 mmm bulk remingtons i used blaze thru have doubled in the last year or so :(

When you print money by the basketfull, the money supply goes up, but the supply of commoditys stays the same. More money in circulation, with stagnant commodity levels equals our old friend inflation. Folks, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Jerry, I know you are old enough to remenber the asswipe Carter. Prime rates of 21%, inflation rate of 10-12% per year. It is allready starting to heat up again with this admin.
Four years from now you will consider today's pricing as "the good old days".

I think the dems goal here is to price us out of our guns rather than flat out take them away. Liability suits on manufacturers, prices for metals, rules against shipping involving huge Hazmat fees, liability suits againat gunsmiths, closing ranges due to "environmental" concerns (forcing us to drive further to shoot on expensive gas.)Overbearing licensing and Inspection on FFL holders. They don't have to worry about the second amendment when you can't afford a gun or components. RD

lolz at charley :P it seems just a few months ago was the "good old days " in the last couple years primers more than doubled ditto brass or almost ..the powder i have seen hasnt been so bad ( up about $10 in ten years ) but the bullets -even the lead .....wow outta sight and every mold i see in a gun show seems to have a price on it more than new .....all this while our wages are dropping ( or just the economy -for me it's both )i read the thread on casting copper bullets ..it seems to me that once a few years ago i read that the fastest they ever pushed a bullet was with a nylon bullet ( i'm sure the range . trajectory isnt great )guess we better start workin on ray guns ( or something similar to the dardick trounds ) when people were foolishly thinking w2k was the end and buying food i bought humble lil .22's figured if it really did go to hell in a handbasket that 22's would be the new wampum ..it may yet come to pass in our lifetimes but let's hope not

checked out a local shop i'd not visited in a while. they did have a better selection of handgun primers then i'd seen in a long time. not good, but better. $3.99 - $5.99 for a 100-count flats. i bought my cci's back in spring time and paid $26.98 - $28.98 for primers needed to keep my hanguns fed for a while. in just a short time that's one hell of price jump. it's a price i'd pay right now, if needed but mercy.
whoever above suggested big gov knows they can't take our guns but they can price us clean out of them ...

how's the hazardous freight fee work? is it one set amount per shipment, no matter if it's a 100-flat of primers or 8# of H110 with 4K primers?
not familiar with it's specifics as i've never ordered primers or powder through mail delivery.

I just bought some Bulseye powder at a gun show for $20.00 and some PMC small pistol primers for $45.00 per 1000. Also some hazmet prices are up to $22.50.

I was deployed for five months recently, and when I can back I found things in my area of NC were a little better than when I left. From what I can gather, the panicked buying has slowed down, but all the panicked orders the gun stores placed months ago are finally arriving. My best local store has bullets and most powders, though primers are spotty. Powder has gone up a couple dollars a pound, bullets are steady, primers can be outrageous. Factory ammo is available again, my local walmart has 223, 9, 45, and buckshot.
I think that if components remain on the free market, we should be ok in the long run. Prices may stay high, but at least stuff will be available. My biggest concern is that components will be regulated and taxed by the government, and some even outright banned. Imagine if the government banned lead, required purchase permits or a license to buy, and imposed a 20% tax. That would be catastrophic to reloaders, buy I bet some liberals have those very ideas in mind if they could have their way. It's enough to put me back into panic buying mode.

I have no faith in the government, so prices most likely will stay up. As the manufactures catch up, we may see the reloading materials start to show up on the shelves again on a regular basis.
During the Klinton era, peices went up and stayed up.

Dragon88, my son is in your place and hopefully will be back in a few months. I have a minor stockpile of components and am struggling to increase it-especially primers/powder. Have started casting my own Pb "boolits". In my very inadequate opinion we had better get what we can while we can. Like another said, prices may just go right through the roof. wc

you have to get a good favorites list of suppliers and check them everyday. I just bought 10k wolf lr and sp at wideners a couple weeks ago actually. they work fine and somtimes i just stare at the stack of them on the bench and get that warm fuzzy....

Tracer, was with a buddy who wanted to buy a case of 39s and 223s when the shortage first started. The store only had a few hundred of 223 and no 39s. He wanted to buy a case from me and I just chuckled. I have been telling him for over a year to get ready. He had the same chance that I did--and he has lots more cash than I. Now he is behind the curve again by not getting his reloading supplies and gear years ago. Some people only see the immediate instead of the horizon. At least many are struggling to gain a foot hold on the looming situation coming. Prep like crazy because IMO, it is going to get crazy. We are canning/drying more this year in case the power grid goes down. I hope my pessimistic outlook is seriously flawed but if not then we are all going to suffer no matter how well prepared we are. wc
