Kaufman County buying replica of Vietnam veterans memorial
February 4th, 2008 by ginter
KAUFMAN, Texas (AP) - Kaufman County is buying a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall and will install it at a local veterans memorial park.
County commissioners have agreed to pay $250,000 for the wall, which is about four-fifths of the size of the original in Washington, D.C.
The aluminum wall has been a traveling exhibit since 1998, according to the company that owns it.
It’s 370 feet long and 8 1/2 feet tall.
County officials have approved a $50,000 down payment for the wall and plan to raise another $200,000 through individual and corporate donations.
The wall is scheduled to arrive in May at Kaufman County Veterans Memorial Park, about 30 miles southeast of Dallas.
County officials say they hope to have the wall open to the public in November.
