My little wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year.

A little history:  For the last four years we've not exchanged gifts for Christmas, birthdays, or our anniversary due to trying to get our business started and running.  Now we're finally able to do something and we set a $700 limit for each of us.

Now, the problem...I've got a Marlin 60SB to squirrel and rabbit hunt and target shoot with and love it.  My wife hunts with me, we take turns with the 22, but we could both hunt with another 22 in the house.  I've been eyeing a Marlin 39A for months and also a nice stacking set of Kobalt or Craftsman tool storage cabinets.  (I restore and repair classic cars on the side).  But...I may not get another shot at either for at least a year.

This seems like a good bunch of upstanding folks here, so if you were in this situation which would you choose?

My wife doesn't ask me anymore if I would choose between a gun or something else. She just gives me the money and sends me to my local gun shop. Then I go to the desert and have a blast. Go for the Marlin.

$700 each?  The answer is obvious, get her the Marlin and the tool box is yours.   (Yeah, I know, she gets to select hers.  Get your salesmanship skills up to date --)

I would get a Ruger 10/22 and a slightly less expensive set of tool cabinets. That should be doable for $700. Sorry doesn't really answer your question, but that's what I would do, best of both worlds.

I would tell her to get the Marlin so as to keep peace in the house...then buy her the cabinets.

She's got her eyes set on some kitchen gadgetry and, of course, purses and shoes. If shoes were hand grenades we could hold off an entire zombie invasion single-handedly and she'd still not miss most of them. She probably feels the same way about me and firearms.

Made a mistake of getting her a vacuum cleaner for our first anniversary (way back when they still had bags in them) and followed it up with a new washer/dryer at Christmas. The scars have faded realy well over the years.
So no, I ain't going anywhere near telling her to get me one and getting her the other. Ain't never had a toolbox "surgically extracted" and don't plan to start now.:shootfoot:

Glad to see that if some of y'all were in the same boat we'd still be rowing around in circles :lol:

Guys,

I use Kennedy tool boxes for all of my machine shop tools, they will out last me and maybe my sons. So $700 would only buy just a part of what I use.

Over on Gunbroker is a 39A for $589.00 on the buy now option. I would recommend a 10/22 for squirrel hunting, but I use an old Mossberg M46 and it does work well for small critters.

So maybe a little shopping around you could get both for you and her.

Katie just tells me to go get my keys and meets me at the back door, so we go and buy whatever.

Jerry

Katie is talking about a Sig for Christmas, for her. That message was rather clear.

Ooohhhh...those Kennedy boxes are great, but way outta the $$$. I might be able to get a wheel and a hinge offa one.

Got a call last night from wife's brother. He's been wanting to buy an AK off me for the last year or more, but never came up with the $$$. He says his girlfriend is going to buy half of it for him for Christmas and he's supposed to be sending her the other half this week (he's in the Navy). She's coming over Thanksgiving weekend to get it (supposedly). I don't trust her with pocket lint, but he's in "love". It's gonna get transferred into HER name and she can work it out with him later. So the situation may go to getting both after all...

Or...

A nicer set of cabinets...

Geez...why did I even think THAT!

Well, Saturday she took me to Sears (an hour and a half away) and suprised me with two nice sets of clearance cabinets she put on hold. Uppers and lowers with wheels. One was the display set and it had a few scratches, but so what. I'll put more scratches on them anyway. The last two sets of blue cabinets they had. She got them all for $370 tax and all. She said there was enough left over to maybe get a 22, just not the Marlin. So, I guess it did work out good.

Going next week to look at the Ruger 10/22 and 77/22 (She claimed the Marlin we have when I got the tool boxes). I looked at the thread on what's the best 22 rifle, but like everybody's gun collection, everybody seems to like different ones the best. So...$300 or so range is the 10/22 the best for the money?

Thanks.

I don't mean to be a pain, but, after all, in a fit of stupidity I bought a Taurus 45colt pump rifle one time. It jams on every third round like clockwork.

So...

I defer to experience now that I learned my lesson.

Thanks again.

You can easily get a good 22 rifle in that price range. I really like my Rem 597, but hands down you'll get the most recommendations for a 10/22.

The last 39a i looked at, sure wasn't the 39 of old.  It had enough extra wood on it to stock a second rifle.  I thought it looked like he!!, and it turned me completely off.  I ended up buying a Henry, and it's great lever gun.  I'd buy another...

Just stay away from Henry pump rifles.

I haven't bought my wife anything in 16 years.  She never liked what I picked out.  Now I just tell her what I want and she gets it for me.  I also give her money to buy her own gift.  It works for us.

I'm glad to see that you have figured out a way to get both.  If you couldn't get both then get the gun.  Then you two would be able to hunt together without taking turns shooting 1 rifle.

My wife won't hunt.  She doesn't want to hurt any animals.  She sure don't mind eating though.

Good luck hopefully it will work out for you.

Now, in your present situation, I'd say pick up a good used 10/22. You can take that basic platform and, as time and money permit, upgrade it into a really good performer.

But, I've got to ask. Why not just get another Marlin 60?

Well, it was all for naught...sort of.

Under the tree Christmas morning was a brand new Benelli SuperNova and a case of field load shells. She got a Christmas bonus at work and used it for that.

Dang near peed myself (I did shed a tear or two).

15 years together and she suprises me more all the time.

We've been hunting twice since the snow storm and five squirrels are no longer spewing out Albertgore's carbon dioxide. She got three...well...for that Benelli, I'll let her win.
