Fella’s;

Finally got the CZ452 American LHB out into the gopher fields.  Not easy today, went to my special place & the foreman was gone.  Even though I’ve shot there for years, I couldn’t get permission from the one hand I did run across.  Oh well.

Plan B went into effect.  We drove to another ranch where I had an invite, but hadn’t shot at before.  Started into the place & I thought I’d run into the family reunion or something.  There were more people at the ranch than in the closest town!  I walked up to the house & the lady who met me said: “Good, we’re just serving, c’mon in & eat.”  I’d never to my knowledge seen her before in my life.  I explained that all I wanted to do was shoot gophers.  I was told they were branding, but go on over to that field & have at it.  I thanked her & left for the field.

It was mid-afternoon by the time we finally got unloaded & ready to shoot, not the best time for activity.  I’d sighted in the CZ on American Eagle 40 grain hollowpoints, just cheap ammo.  But, since that was what I sighted in with, that’s what I used.  Loaded up my two 10 round mags plus the 5 rounder it came with.   Put the sling on the gun & off we went.

There were gophers!  Not lots, but they were definitely there.  My son spotted the first couple of shots & I cranked the elevation down about 2 inches at a hundred yards.  The windage was on.  We shot till about 4:30 & then had to go to make other appointments.

I’m very pleased with the Nikon Monarch 3.3-10X A/O mil-dot scope on the CZ.  This scope is a joy to use for me with my very imperfect master eye.  The placement of the scope on the gun is just right.  The Talley rings may be more expensive, but in this case I certainly can’t argue with the results I got for the money spent.  The mil-dots make adjusting to the rapidly changing angles & ranges much easier than any other form of reticle I’ve used over the years.

As for the gophers, I got my hits.  Once I got used to the combination of gun, scope & ammo, the hits just kept on comin’.  I had to stop & adjust the sling, which took a few minutes & greatly improved the field shooting once done.  A couple of hunting hawks overflew us also.  Their calls put the quietus on the shooting for a few minutes also.  IMHO, the 5 round magazine that comes with the gun is next to useless for this type of shooting.  You’d spend more time changing out & refilling mags than you would shootin’.  Problem is, the 10 round mags cost me damn close to $30.00 each, & I had to repair one of them to make it feed correctly!   At $30.00 a pop, that’s unacceptable.

All-in-all it was a slow afternoon for the shooting.  But the shooting was there & enjoyable while it lasted.  Serious ammo testing is on the agenda next I think.

I just recently got rid of my CZ452 Varmit heavy barrel in .17hmr. I tried all the different rounds I could find and tried 3 different scopes but I just could not get any better than 1 3/4" at 100 yards. The bolt also seemed very rough when working it not smooth at all like my Rem 700. Im glad you got a shooter:thumbs: I have a savage 93r17 that out shot the CZ it does 1" at 200 yards and Im damned happy with that. Jimmy

Got myself a CZ 452 LUX, floated the barrel, did trigger work on it and it is one sweet shooter...Wish I had a couple more, they are worth the money and time.  5 shots at 50 yds, one ragged hole :beer:

Well, thats kinda sad, I recently bought a CZ 452 2E ZKM Varmint in .22 Long rifle and I am thrilled with the way it shoots with CCI Mini Mags.  I also have a Henry Golden Boy in .17HMR that I have shot 3/4 inch groups at 100yds and a 93R17 Thumbhole Savage 17 HMR that shoots good but not quite as good as the Golden Boy.  The first Henry Golden Boy I had, had a terribly fouled barrel from the start.  I finally sent in to the factory and they sent a new rifle back within two weeks.   I'm happy with all them.

I have a 527 American in .223 that I love. It has dispatched many a varmint around the place and is just a joy to shoot. Love the single set trigger. (Just don't blow on it once it's set!)

I have a CZ 452 training rifle, I has been a better quality and more accurate rifle that any of my previous Marlin's, Ruger's or Savage's. I am now in the market for the American 452 as the hump back stocks are hard on your neck when using a scope.

Timber,

About 4 years ago, I bought a CZ550 Varmint in 308.  Gun is very smooth and accurate....and the single set trigger is nice.  This gun kinda talked me into another CZ, this time a 452 American in 22WMR.  Both guns shoot less than a .5" at 100.

10 years ago, I'd have turned up my nose at CZ-but it appears they have been a well kept secret.  The 550 is as close to a custom gun as you can get without spending custom gun money.  Wood is very nice on both the guns.

If it says anything, I've been thinking about buying another one-this time in 22-250.

Take care.
