Hi all!  The PDs are starting to dig up the pasture so I figured its a perfect time for a new rimfire rifle.  I was pretty much sure I wanted another semi-auto .22lr (Marlin model 60) until I saw a .17 HMR in person.  A local dealer has a new Savage 93R17-BVSS and a Marlin 917V in stock.  I saw that a few of you are using the 93r17s and have had good luck. Anyone have a Marlin? Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated.  Have fun and be safe!

I don't know about the Marlin , but the Savage will impress you . I have owned three of them and every one was 1/2 inch or better rifle at 100 yards with the Hornady Ammo. Buy the Savage and don't look back.

I was leaning towards the Savage, but have never owned one.  I guess there is a first time for everything!  Any suggestions on what I should offer him for the rifle.  I think the Savage website has a MSRP of $353.  Thanks for your response bea175.  Now I need to start shopping for a SS/silver scope.

I have the Marlin.  The basic blued, walnut stock number.  Bought the first one I tripped across back when the cartridge was first introduced.  Think it cost me $189 NIB.  Not sure if you can get one for that today.  It's easily accurate enough for ranges that are considered reasonable for the cartridge.  First critters taken with mine were a couple problem badgers digging the hell out of a horse pasture.  It's a bit larger an animal then the cartridge is probably ideal for but that little 17 gr. bullet sure did the job easy enough.  Lots of gophers have been sent to the great beyond with it since.  Good luck with the purchase.  >>  klallen

I'm leaning towards the Savage, I can get one around here for 210.00, can't see any reason to pick the marlin over the savage! Savages prices are better! only thing is I will be checking the crown and make sure it's cut correctly!

Is that for the Savage or the Marlin?  I think he was asking well over $300 for the Savage and around $250 for the Marlin.  I bought a Bushy Varminter from the same guy and I payed about $100 below MSRP, but probably way above dealer cost.  I originally wanted to spend less than $200.  There goes that idea.  Thanks.

I Got it!  I kind of splurged on the scope and went with a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40.  Its more of a scope than I originally wanted, but after looking through a few cheaper scopes I decided on the Nikon.  I had a Leupold VX-II in hand, but couldn't justify the $300+ price.  I've already killed one PD.  Thanks for your input guys.

Good deal , you will love the little 17, but the varmints will hate it. Nice setup. Use the 20 gr XTP Hornady on anything bigger than rabbits ,because they hold together much better on the bigger stuff.

I bought the Savage 93 with a bull barrel when they first came out. You won't find a better gun for the money. Mine does 3/8" groups at 100 yards with most ammo, but prefers Hornady. You might want to consider the Remington 597. An auto works great for PD's.

Well, After a couple hundred rounds of various ammo (CCI 20 gr., REM 17 gr., Hornady 17 & 20 gr.) it seems that my gun prefers the 20 gr. XPT Hornady bullet (But the PD's don't care for them much).  The gun shop I bought my 93 from also had a Rem. 597.  For some reason I had my heart set on a bolt action (price was right too).  The 597 is a very nice gun and would be handy on follow up shots.

I have a Savage 93R17-BVSS  which shoots 3/8 " @100 yds.,after installing a Rifle Basix Sear that lets go at 24 oz.It makes the Savage a real shooter considering the stock trigger let go at 6.5 lbs,But alas the new gun bug bit me and I just bought a new CZ 452 Varminter in 17 hmr. Adjusted the trigger to 22 oz.glass bedded it and re crowned the barrel,Will sight in next couple of days and the best shooter stays with me and the other will go to my son:thumbs:These 17's are a ground squirrels and rabbits night mare to 110 yds ,just BOOM FLOP no wounded animals with a decent hit on my part

I have the savage in bull barrel synth stock, I love it! Not sure that its true but someone told me that the savages have better accuracy than the marlins.

Whistlepig,

My wifes brother lives in Torrington Wyo. he lined me up with a friend of his to shoot PD's on his friends place.  A couple thousand acres.  I had a blast, I took my favorite Digger Squirrel rifle back with me, My Sako 30-06 hunter with 125gr spitzers loaded to  3000 fps.  He was concerned about richochets, I told him not to worry the 125's disindegrate  on impact.  I had a chance to prove that by shooting at two PD's one directly behind the other, I blew the first one up and the second ran a few feet and started eating again. That was his mistake as the second round took him out. I impressed him, I shot a PD about 75 yds away and said, wow, he went 4 ft in the air.

The fellow I was hunting with had two Marlin 17HMR's and did very, very well with them.  I was very impressed.

If you want to put the money into it go for the savage (make sure it has the accu trigger). If you dont want to spend as much new england makes one in their handy rifle.  I have one of these and it will shoot .75 inch groups at 100 yards.

Whistle Pig: I have seen MANY very accurate Rifles in caliber 17 HMR!

Including the Rifles already mentioned in the above posts.

In addition to the savages and the Marlins in 17 HMR being accurate I have also been impressed with the accuracy of 17 HMR's I have seen and shot that were made by CZ, Cooper, Ruger, NEF and Volquartsen!

Maybe what I am trying to say is you would be hard pressed (according to my observations so far!) to find a Rifle in 17 HMR caliber that is inaccurate!

I attribute this to the quality of ammunition manufactured and todays assembly techniques for firearms.

My Ruger 77/17 V/T with Weaver 4x16 power scope has made many groups (5 shots at 100 yards) measuring under .750"! Its best group to date has been .502".

Best of luck with your new 17 HMR!

Long live the 17 HMR!

Hold into the wind

VarmintGuy
