Morning Timber >> I like mine. It's the basic Marlin 17v topped with a cheap Tasco 4-16x40mm. Didn't want to get anything fancy as the cartridge, and rifles for it, had just come out and if it went the way of the 5mm, I didn't want to have much sunk into the rig. As things have worked out, I'm pretty confident it's here to stay.
It's a good rimfire to have, albeit, expensive to shoot, relative to the other rimfires available. I don't mind the cost so that's a non-issue for me. Others are completely turned off by cost alone, and that's ok too. The 22lr is always there for those folks.
Performance wise, it groups an inch or so at 100 yds. Plenty accurate for it's effective ranges, which I'd call 300 yds. and under for gophers and pd's. Calm days ya might be able to stretch things out farther. I haven't. All manufacturers stats for the cartridge list 2550 fps with the 17 gr. V-Max. I tested this out when I first got mine and found that the Hornady ammo was averaging 2630 fps. One of the first times I've ever experienced "actual" velocities for factory ammo exceeding published standards. Along with Hornady, I've used ammo loaded by Remington (V-Max), Federal (V-Max) and CCI (TNT). All bullet weights are 17 gr. . The TNT is a sturdier bullet. I have not gotten any of the new stuff by Hornady using the 20 gr. XTP bullet but this is the bullet that I'd use if stuff larger then pd's were on the agenda.
The first animals ever taken with my 17 HMR were two badgers. For me, this is the top end of what I'd hunt using the 17 gr. bullets. Badgers, fox, large chucks ... the 17 gr. bullet would do well at relatively close range on game this size. On smaller gophers and pd's, that bullet unzips them real nice. Hits have been made out to 200, 250 yds. Been lots of arguement as to whether this round is a viable coyote round. I've never tried it. With things in the safe more appropriate, I really don't see value in over-extend a round into something it's not. That said, it's all where the animal's hit, I suppose. I do believe a 17 gr. V-Max would kill a coyote deader'n dead, but ... I do believe that the 20 gr. XTP would be far and away more effective on coyotes then the 17 gr. V-Max. For me personally, I'll reserve coyote duty for the centerfire rounds. Chat with ya later, bud. >> klallen

Timber,
I've thought about getting one, just to fool with. What stops me is the high ammo cost. I can buy .223, (5.56 MM), for the same or cheaper. It's a lot more fun shooting an AR for the same price as a HMR. This cartridge does appear to be catching on however. That, in my mind, is a good thing. I know someday I'll spring for one, but right now it's just not tops on my list. If I were to get one I'd probably go with a Ruger 77 just because I don't have a Ruger bolt rimfire. But Savage and Marlin both provide nice models as well. We'll see what the future brings. billt

Don't have one, never shot one, but I sure find a lot of 17 HMR brass laying around at the range.
I think that cartridge would be great in an area where noise is a concern while varmint hunting and more than a 22lr is desired. Oh it'll still be loud, but not like a centerfire. I think.
If bullet ricochet is a concern these little bullets should explode on impact, rather than go flying off somewhere. I think.
I might have one but just don't have a need for one these days. Awe, to heck with need, I'll just take a look at some next time I'm in the gunstore.

I got one back when they first came out. Mine is a Savage (93?) plain jane bolt with bull bbl. Groups @ 100 yds run about 3/8 for 3, depending on wind. It is the most accurate rifle I have.
Way too destructive on squirrels, which is what I bought it for. Hoping for a solid to come out.

If you can afford to swing it, TIMBER, pick one up for yourself. I've not run into a person that has bought one that regrets the purchase. They are fun. >> klallen

Hey Klallen.I might just do that.I think it would be a good choice for my daughter to shoot with me and 6mm inside 100 yards. After I verified with a few boxes of ammunition, that it shoots good enough to kill crows at the deer feeder in the back yard of course..

Bea, was it hard at all to swap out the Savage trigger for the Rifle Basix? Or is it a drop in fit? That Cooper is a real nice looking rifle. Those squirrels around your place must be havin' fits.

It took me about 15 min to swap it out and it is a drop in fit. The hard part is getting it adjusted right. The hardest part is getting the little bit of creep out and keeping it safe , very little errow either way. Little to much one way and you have a lot of creep and the other it will fire when you close the bolt hard but it can be done . The trigger pull on the Savage is around 2 lb , where with the factory sears about 6 or 7 lb's. The replacement is well worth the few min to install. You can call Rifle Basix and they will talk you through the install process. The number is on the instruction. One of my friends , who is not mechanical minded , called and they talked him through the adjustment . If you have any problems just give me a call and i will try to help.

93 vs savage 17hmr a little pocket of power at over 2500 fps and one flat shooting little critter. fun too shoot and easy to get set up and tuned to shoot out to 250 yards. great critter gun and even small predators well worth the money.
