Settled -well mabey-the old arguement of covered(CCI)VS crimped 22 shotshells today--And the clear winner was-----------------------------------------------------------the crimped ones:troll:My money was on the CCI's----From a RIFLED barrel there was no comparision----pattern with the crimp Winchesters were not only more filled out but more uniform--less space between pellets---They were definetely more lethal than my favorite CCI ----Thought I would pass this wisdom along----Now I need to find one of those smooth barreled .22's and make the CCI's the winner

I know at least one barrelmaker (ER Shaw?) made smoothbore .22 barrels for several rifles. GM does offer a smoothbore barrel for the almost non existent 10/22 Magnum (see other post!) Several manufacturrers have offered smoothbore .22s in the past, like Marlin, but I'm not aware of any on the market right now. I'm sure they don't set the world on fire with thier sales figures.

The only experience I've had with shot form a pistol is with .357 speer shotshells.  I took a shot at a ruffed grouse at 10ft with a 4inch S&W.  I fired and centered him.  He kind of fluffed his feathers cocked his head and looked at me with one beady black eye.  I fired and centered him a second time.  He fluffed up again and flew away!  Haven't had much faith in shot from a pistol scince.

I have killed many rats that were living under pieces of sheet metal from a blown away barn. I used a Dan Wesson 44 mag with handloaded  #9 shot. As long as the range is short, they work very well.

I've killed cottontails at 10 yards with CCI's .45 ACP shotloads. i was lucky enough to find an RCBS die set for .45 ACP shotshells for $25, and I've been loading my own now. They feed, fire and eject 100%, and pattern as well as the commercial loads.

If you ever decide you want to get rid of those.... I would like the first shot. Those are great for killing snakes.

I wanted that die set for a long time, but didn't want it badly enough to pay RCBS' price. even Midway wants $150 for the set, with another $90 or so for the trim die. I couldn't shoot enough shotloads during the rest of my life to make that worth it!

I got the die set, and about 50 formed brass. I dug up an old Lee powder thru expander die for .45 ACP, cut it off to the proper length, and hardened it to make my own trim die.

I couldnt justify spending that much on them either. I used to buy the cci's and keep some in my truck and home and wherever was handy. They are great for snakes. I guess I will just stick to buying the loaded ammo for those.

I guess I'll jump in. Tried .22 shot shells. I thought they were worthless unless you were a few feet away. Never used them in a pistol though. Haved tried 44 mag shotshells in a pistol. A little more impessive. Didn't shoot any critters with them but shot at paper and at 15 yds. they could put a hurtin' on something. Was #9 shot.

I have heard of people using them in 9mm for self defense as a less than lethal load. I had some in .45acp and they were pretty good up close. They wouldnt have done much more than piss somebody off past 10 yards or so.

CCI marketed them for that at one time. Veeeeerrry bad juju, that. By definition, the use of a firearms is considered deadly force. Using a load that will probably blind someone with a face shot, and trying to explain why you didn't think deadly force was needed for self defense will lead to a whole world of trouble.  Same for the home brewed weldingrod/CCI shotcaps I've seen in magazines over the years. If deadly force is not justified, I'm not going to shoot. Period. If deadly force is required, I want the baddest JHP I can buy.

I have used the 22 and 22mag shotshells, for snakes in the summer and to get rid of the pigeons in my cow barn. Work good especially in the barn its very small with a tin roof and i dont want to go putting holes in the roof. So anything bigger thatn 22 mag is out of the question for me.

Nothing like "magic" bullets. I think there are many defense loads out there that are as good or better than BTs, (20 year old technology and design) that don't have the negative image associated with them. Not saying that would be a litigation factor in the civil action that follows many shootings, but it might.

I've done the same with swallows in my shop. work slick. the 22mag is preferrable, IMO, the LR just doesn't seem to want to penetrate their feathers beyond 8-10'. I did get a triple... ONCE... they had been nesting in a wall and I drilled a hole in the end of the wall & slid the bbl of my 22mag in there. managed to catch the hen and 2 young in the nest at the time. of course, I had to rip out a bunch of sheetrock to clean up the mess but they don't nest in the wall there anymore.

I shot sparrows out of our old apple tree with the crimped Remingtons and a single-shot .22 rifle when I was 12 or so. We had lots of Granny Smiths to make pies out of and a shortage of sparrows as a result. My sister's old tomcat used to wait patiently under the tree, where he'd make short work of any sparrow carcases that fell. Those were his glory days.

As I recall, the Remington box listed the shot inside as being "size: dust". I believe CCI uses size 12 in the .22 shot loads. They are, none the less, fairly effective.

A few years back I was hiking down a wooded trail to a fishing hole I wanted to try out and heard that unmistakeable "hsssssssssss!" and then the rattle. The buzzworm was about 10 feet away, coiled under the overhang of a good-sized boulder that I would have passed within a foot or two of, had I not heard the snake first. I had my Davis .22 Mag derringer (pictured below) with me, both chambers carrying a CCI .22 Mag shot capsule load. I only had to use one of 'em. From 10 feet it killed that snake as dead as it gets, although the body writhed for a while. I cut the head and tail off and put the body on ice for a buddy of mine who eats rattlers. The rattle became part of my hatband.

I shot rattlers out in the desert for many years with everything from a .380 to .44 magnum. They all work, but the shot loads seem to offer a better chance of stopping the buzz on the first round. Believe it or not, I had a rattler dodge .380's at close range (about 5 feet). I had to aim behind its head to kill it 'cuz it kept bobbing its head out of the way right when I fired. I think they must be able to sense the heat and/or blast and react pretty quick. It was the strangest thing I ever saw. That one was about a 5-footer and had a cottontail rabbit inside it.
