I was cleaning my guns and decided to post and see if anyone else still has one of the Rem Nylon 66 22 rifles. I have own a bunch of them over the years . I still like shooting mine with open sights and it is one of my favorite field rifles when just walking in the woods . It is so light , you almost forget you are carrying it. Does anyone else still own and shoot one these little 22's. The rifle was way ahead of its times when introduced by Remington. They are getting harder to find and cost much more now than when new. This was one of Remington's biggest winner along with the 788.

A Nylon 66 was the first rifle I bought for myself. It was on wheat harvest in Campo, Colorado in the summer of 1959. I would have been 11 years old at the time. I earned the money driving a combine.

My dream was the black one but it never happened.

From what I understand the mold? simply wore out and Remington said too expensive to retool?

I grew up using my dad's. I bought a 66 and a 77 for my son as presents over the years. Lot's of fun for plinking and games but conventional wisdom says the sights are to coarse for target work and the scope mounts on a pressed steel jacket that serves as part of the action, not very precision either. All that said my brother used to go out hunting squirrels and often brought back a limit of 5 for 5 shots with the iron sights. Go figure. RD

I've got one of the Black Apache versions, bought in 1966.  Well, actually, I bought it as a present for the wife (at least, that's what I told her) to use when we didn't have any money for recreation, and we were going to the city dump to shoot rats at nite.

For my next birthday, she bought me a dress.  I never got to even wear the dress, but she still claims the little black .22.

It's had a lot of rounds thru it, and it still shoots good.  I agree the sight is a little "coarse", but you get used to it shooting rats.  I just mounted a scope on it in the last few days (we're gettin' old).  Had to mill a curve in the bottom of the bases, since the top of the receiver stuck up too far for the rings to grip properly in the groove.

I have a Rem Nylon 11 bolt action with a 45 yr old Weaver B4 22 scope, great for CB caps on digger squirrels and other varmints.

I have one but don't shoot it much. I prefer my Winchester Mod 62.
