I just read over on rimfirecentral.com that some one is making 5mm Remington Magnum ammo. The post says it will be available after the shot show.

The only thing that puzzles me is why did they name it the 5mm?  That pretty much killed any chance it ever had to succeed...  Americans have only embraced a few metric designated cartridges.

It should have been called the .204 RRM(Remington Rimfire Magnum)!

Scott (still think the 22 mag is better) B

You are correct. I thought about buying one when they came out but I had a 22 rimfire and a 22-250 so I couldn't see the point.

Yeah.  Centurion is putting it out.  30 gr. HP at 2300 fps. 50-count box of it over on GunBroker now for $27 Buy-It-Now.

Makes the price of my HMR ammo affordable.  LOL.

Thats only 54 cents each. The way components is going that will soon be cheap.

The price of Match Kings in the last Midway flier are shocking.

Yeah, I know the cost.  Folks were balking at the thought of me willingly spending 20 cents for an HMR round back when I bought the rifle and started stock-piling ammo.  Thought I was crazy  :nut:  .  I can't necessarily disagree with the crazy part, but sure like the look of 20 cent rimfire rounds over 54 cents.  I've little doubt if the .22WMR, 5mmRM and .17HMR would have all been available when I was interested in making my rimfire purchase, I'd have still gone with the HMR.

It is good folks who hung onto their 5mm's now have a supply to feed their rifles.  I'm sure they're happy as can be.

When I first saw the add (the ONLY add ever) in Shotgun News for the new 17 Aquila round and the High Standard barrels to be produced and sold I was excited. I had long wanted a 22LR necked down to 17 and loaded @ 1100 fps. I thought that it was a great ideal. You could offer two power levels: 1100 fps lead and 2000+ fps jacketed and have a ready made starter rifle that would have restricted range and a good small game round. I never saw one made. I do have a box of the ammo, but it has no real use. I understand it can be fire id the 17 MACH2.

Then the 17 HMR came out and I got one of the first Savage 93 bull barrel rigs. It was accurate, but tore up game. It turns a squirrel inside out with a body hit.

Then the 17 MACH2 came out. Same story, slightly slower. I still would like to see a low speed lead bullet that could compete with the 22LR in price. It probably won't happen. I decided to just use the old 22 MAG for longer shots with less meat distruction. The 17 HMR is a tack driving, no hold over round out to 100 yards with no problem, but is it actually usefull? I don't really think it will survive, just a modern 5mm Remington Magnum.

Evening MR  >>  In my opinion, the HMR is already way beyond the point of simple survival.  It's fully established.  All you have to do is look at the sheer number of gun manufacturers chambering rifles and handguns in the round.  Scopes designed specifically for it.  The number of ammo manufacturers putting their stamp on the case.  The 5mm was never accepted my so many manufacturers.  As such, with Remington being the only major interest in it, when interest faded, it was all to easy for Rem. to pull the plug.

Fast forward to the introduction of the HMR and you have the "timing" factor.  You can tell by the way the HMR took off that those interested in the rimfire class were starving for another viable option.  Something different, not necessarily better, but different then the decades old .22 standby's.  And as options go, it's more then holding it's own.  >>  klallen

I have to agree that the HMR will be around for a while. Our range is covered in 17HMR empties. There are literaly thousands on the ground and the variety of guns for it in such a short period is amazing.

Let me correct my previous statement to be the 17 Mach2. The 17 HMR does satisfy a niche, but the JR version doesn't have much to recommend it.
