Does anyone carry a rimfire pistol for conceal carry? I have heard a lot of opinions on it both ways.

Good question. I believe anything would be better than a stick.
I don't use the .22 but it could be small, light and deadly. Only under special circumstances would a non drugged offender not be detered is presented with or shot with any handgun.
The drug induced offender might be a different story. Every day on the news you hear about home invasions with the owners at home. People who do this are aware you are at home and are willing to or so out of it, they choose to break in any way.
In this case, you need as much caliber as you can bring to the gunfight to protect your home and family that are known as man-stoppers.

At home I have larger firearms. I have a nice Walther P22 and I am very comfortable with it and it is light and carries well.

Smith & Wesson as well as Tauras make a .22 Mag that would be a good choice if you were determined to use a .22 caliber handgun.

i suppose someone might. this someone doesn't, though.
i don't take a minimalist approach to choosing a cc weapon. commiting to carrying a weapon ment for personal defense demands that i carry something a little more substantial ( read that ... larger ). i also don't subscribe to the "if it's all you have, it's better then nothing" school of though. if i can afford a handgun in .22lr, i can certainly save a little longer and get something more to my liking ( read that ... larger ).
please notice that i chose to use phrases like "demands that I carry" and "to MY liking" very intentionally? these are efforts and considerations i make for myself. if someone chooses to arm themself with a rimfire of any kind for personal defense, good luck with it. when trouble time strikes, i sincerely wish them nothing but complete and utter success.

My middle son carries a Jennings 22 (you all remember those?) in his pocket, his idea is to shoot the perp in the testicles thru his pants pockets, then he will shoot the perp in the head when the perp bends over and grabs his crouch.
Don't know how effective that would be. I carry a S&W 340 PD with 38 +Ps or a 1911.
Wish I could readily buy some Winchester Ranger Ammo locally, no name or credit card type of sale.

I worked with a Tarus PT-22 several years back, with an idea I might use it for deep concealment. Never could get comfortable with the idea of something that small.

Only incidentally - now and then when hunting deer or elk, for the purpose of taking forest grouse. So, concealed? Yes. For self-defense - not really, but as has already been mentioned, just about any firearm aces out a club or a rock when the chips are down.
To be accurate, I have in bygone days been known to carry a superposed .22 magnum derringer (Davis Industries) in my pants or coat pocket. It was all I had at the time for CCW use. Now it's tucked away in my range bag and only comes out to shoot a couple times a year for the novelty of it, and to reassure myself that I can still hit the boiler room of a man-sized target at 7 yards with both barrels.
Strange - that little Davis has got to be the cheapest gun in my collection, yet I can't bring myself to get shed of it.

Never carried a .22lr, My buddy won't give up his J22 for carrying. I use a S&W mod.10 bull barrel with Glaser blue and silver tips. The small carry gun is a AMT 380.

I agree my pick and always has been .357mag, at my age I don't want to fight, just gitter done. when I was younger I carried a .45 long colt, to heavy when you get older, it is a fine piece but heavy. The .357 will get it done.

My wife carries a .22Mag (Black Widow) in a fanny pouch. Been trying to get her to carry my S&W Model 60. Says it's too heavy. I'm satisfied that the .22Mag will take care of business. Small means being very, very accurate, except at close range. I would rather she have a bit more knock-down power at a not-so-close range. I have .38 +P ammo for her to use, as .357Mag in this pistol is a bit much for her small hands/wrists. She used it for her qualification to get a CC permit. That's the last time she fired it.

Use to carry a Jennings .22 with CC Stingers. I still wouldn't want to get shot with it. Went to a Glock 27 but couldn't get used to the size(it shot better than my G22) and weight. I got a small promotion so I stimulated the economy with a Rohrbaugh 9mm. Great carry piece but I'm out to lunch on how it shoots and I do not like the mag disconnect at all. I have been told by numerous people that this particular gun has to be broken in and I only have about 40 rounds through it.

In my younger years i was an avid small game hunter. At night hunting racoons with hounds and in the daytime squirrel & rabbit hunting. Even these small animals required multiple shots on many occasions. IMHO I would suggest the .380 as the minimum for concealed carry. When choosing a handgun for carry, keep in mind that bad guys frequently travel in packs and are normally armed themselves. While I would feel comfortable trying to stop one individual bad guy with a .22 semi-auto, two or three would be a totally different story. My own ccw is a S&W # 340. I would actually prefer to carry a full size 1911, but find them too heavy, as they give me a backache due to an old injury, before that accident i carried my 1911. I keep a shotgun in the truck.

I carried one years ago while driving trucks. A Colt Diamondback. I was in Harlem and the Bronks quite a bit. After you see a few really big apes strung out on drugs, a 22 feels awfully unworthy. Wasn't long till I switched to a Colt Trooper in 357 but loaded with 125gr 38 spec's loaded as hot as I could get away with.
In the unlikely event you should need to draw a firearm on a person, the idea is not to bluff and accuracy means little at 8'. Then you need something that will finish it quickly. Even if the first shot doesn't do it, it needs to slow the aggressor down enough for another shot. A big man, especially a big man on drugs can carry a lot of miss-directed 22 bullet's.

I talked to my brother a little while ago, he said he carries a Colt 25 ACP pocket pistol and have never had the problems that the Jennings 22 have.
Just thought I would mention this. The Colt is well made and would cost a lot more than the Jennings if they were made today.

If you add up the % of legit misfires between a rimfir pistol and an centerfire pistol or revolver ( really not a HUGE difference) what are those few percentage points worth???
I'll take a centerfire over a rimfire except in a very few circumstances!
