I have seen the conversion kits to maker 10/22 and ARs in to bullpups, something like the Brits use. But how many people out shoot such a rifle from their collection of firearms?

I have the Bushmaster M17S Bullpup in .223Rem. I like it a lot, but then I do like the odder guns.......

Bullpups can be an 'acquired taste' - the ergonomics are much different than standard rifles. Some guys don't like having the chamber right against their head. With some actions, you tend to hear things - like my Bushpup's recoil springs twanging! Most Bullpups tend to be very 'tail-heavy', though a good one will handle much like a large handgun. The Bushpup has excellent balance - I could imagine Arnie firing two - one in each ham-fisted hand!
Mag swaps take some practice - not as quick and easy as most battle rifles. Bullpups have sighting issues too - most have tall spindly iron sights. My M17S has NO iron sights, being an early model - later version had small 'handgun' type sights for emergency use. An optical sight is pretty much necessary. Mine has a Picatinny rail atop the carry handle. Scope selection can be critical, for proper eye relief.
Most bullpups are NOT designed for lefty use! The ejection port is 'in yer face'! Even shooting properly, often exaust gasses will be breathed in - I learned to hold my breath for a few seconds on each shot.
It isn't a 'target rifle', but a bullpup properly designed can be a pretty good shooter. Mine will do 1MOA with standard commercial and good GI ammo. The Steyr AUG is 'surgically accurate' - but it's priced in the stratosphere too!
Avoid AK bullpups - horribly imbalanced. I haven't handled the Ruger bullpup conversions. They do look pretty cool. I have considered doing a 10-22 in the bullpup stock just for 'fun'.

I use the Steyer AUG at work, (Aussie Army).... i have to admit to my own particular dislikes.
I was "brought up" on a real rifle, the 7.62mm L1A1 SLR (FAL)you hit a man with it and he stayed down, he is hiding behind a tree? no worries, cut the tree down and then give HIM the good news.
I never really got used to a plastic rifle, i find them to be very accurate though, and yes a lil "twangy" (however no differnet to the M16).
They balance nicely with a full 30 round mag, never had the "tail heavy" problem that Bigdog mentions.
They are comfortable to carry for long periods of time, and once you get used to them mag changes can be very swift.
Anyway thats just my opinion anyway, overall, they are an interesting design concept, and are light and comfortable to use......... eventually.

Someone was offering a bullpup kit for the sks's but the batf put a stop to it. But lately i'm hearing all kinds of stuff about the bullpups again. But i might be interested in a russian izhmash saiga (akm) bullpup conversion or an sks conversion. (maybe) Last edited on Sun Feb 7th, 2010 02:09 AM by BigBill
