I picked up my 2 new Mausers from Mitchell's yesterday morning. And they are BEAUTIFUL! I was a little leery buying on line sight unseen, but after I opened the boxes I was very pleasantly suprised. These guns are absolutely perfect in every detail. These are the first Mausers I've ever bought. I, like many, have seen them at gun shows, on the rack at gun shops, and the like, but never saw one that was really nice. Most were beat up, and or, well shot and used. But these are BRAND NEW, unissued, and for all purposes as good as it gets! One is a "Premium Grade", and the other is a "Collecter Grade". To be very honest, I can't really see much difference between the two. This pleases me rather than dissapoints me. I would much rather have 2 very nice guns, than 1 really nice one, and one that is "so, so". Both are, as the photos show, as mint as can be. I would highly recommend anyone who is in the market for a really nice Mauser, to grab one of these while the "gettin' is good", as they say! They come beautifully boxed and packaged, with all the accessories, as well as Bayonet and scabbard, cleaning kit, money back guarantee, certificate of authenticity, leather ammo pouches, the works. All in mint condition. Price is $299.00 for the "Collecter Grade", $499.00 for the "Preimum Grade". I intend to get at least 2 more "Collecter Grade" guns. You just can't go wrong for the price. Here are some pics. I'll post some more. billt
I left out the most important thing of all, ALL NUMBERS MATCH. Bolt, Reciever, Stock, Bottom Metal ALL have matching numbers.

Here is a link to Mitchell's photo gallery on their website. You can see how similar their photo guns are to the ones they actually sell. No false advertising here. billt http://www.mitchellsales.com/photogallery/index.htm Last edited on Fri Mar 4th, 2005 04:03 PM by

Man, that was fast. Very nice. Is the one in front the Premium grade? It seems to have a better matching forend stock. What are the bayonet and scabbard like? So when are you going to shoot them?

Gunrunner,
Yes, the front gun is the Premium Grade Rifle. I'll try and post some pictures of the Bayonet & Scabbard. I'm going to be ordering some Brass, Bullets, Dies shortly. This is one that I want to "roll my own" on for sure. The 8MM Mauser has really good possibilitys balistically. It's going to be fun exploring them from a handloading point of view. If anyone has experience loading this round, I'd love to here your favorite receipes. billt

Looks like you got a couple of fine rifles there. Hope they shoot as good as they look.

Very nice billt .I can`t help with any good loads for the 8mm Mauser. As soon as I bought mine it went to the gunsmith to be stripped for the action. I`m sure a few of these fellas have loaded for it though...

Wish I could help with load data but I've never had an 8mm. I think you'll have fun trying loads and puting those babys to use.

Rem. 185 gr. Corelokt bullet, over 42.0 to 46.0 grains of IMR-4064. CCI 200 primers, Remington cases. My M48 likes about 42.0 grains best. Sub 2" groups at 100 metres, with iron sights....all day long.
Just to be sure (every rifle is different...and M48s ARE old rifles)...start a bit below 42.0 grains. I would start at 40.0 grains, then work up. This load data originally was for use with 200 gr. bullets, but, substituting a LIGHTER bullet is fine (as long as the original load is safe, in the first place). 46.0 grains is a max. load, with the 200 gr. bullet (about 50,000 CUP pressure)....but, with the 185gr. bullets, pressure is a bit lower. M48s have a tendency to have "sticky bolt" with max. loads...so, I would stay below 46.0 grains. You'll most likely get better accuracy at the lower end of the charge weight range, anyway.
By the way, nice looking M48s. Mitchell's does sell pretty rifles. Most of the milsurp crowd hate Mitchell's though...because they think the prices are too high...and the advertising copy Mitchell's uses CAN be a bit misleading. I just choose to think of Mitchell's as supplying already restored/ refinished rifles - and that is what you are paying for. With one of their rifles, you have no restoration work to do - they are ready..."right out of the box".
Oh, one thing....which may (or may not) be important to you. Mitchell's claims that the stocks for these rifles are TEAK. That is NOT correct - they are of Carpathian ELM. Reddish Elm resembles Teak, so this is probably where the mistake originated. Mitchell's HAS been informed about their error, many times - but, they refuse to correct it.
It's not a really big deal, IMO....it just irks me that they won't correct their advertising. Last edited on Mon Jun 27th, 2005 10:52 PM by notbob
