I got 3: Iver Johnson paratrooper w/folding stock & canvas case, a civilian version, and this little jewel:

They are a lot of fun to shoot. I have all the equipment to reload 30 car, and a bunch of picked up brass. I just can't seem to make myself reload for it though. MilSurp is too cheap and available.

I would use a 30 car on a small deer within 100 yards. I would have to pick my shot. I actually hunted one years ago. I looked at the energy compaired to a 44 MAG and decided to try a small deer under 100 yards. preferably under 75 yards. It was the last day of doe season, I was in a pile of blackberry bushes and out she came at about 23 yards and put her head down and fed. I had a S&W MOD 29 8 3/8" bbl in a crossdraw holster and the IJ. I took a bead on her neck with the 30 cal and fired. NOTHING! NO REACTION! She looks up and goes back to eating. 3 shots and she walked off. I shot 2 more times @ 45-50 yards, same setup: head down feeding. I was firing from a sitting position the first time and a kneeling position the second time.  Trailed the doe for 4 hours. No blood. Checked sights. Dead on, 1" group @ 50 yards.

Final evaluation: Buck (or in this case, doe) fever. I tracked my bullets impack down and reconstructed the scene. Seems I was using one of the side site protectors! After reconstructing the scene I VIVIDLY remembered the sight picture, and it was the sight wing. What a hoot! If I had not tried a neck shot with her feeding, the bullets all passed over her bent down neck. A heart/lung shot would have damaged her front shoulder and knocked her down. Why didn't I draw and use the 44? I still don't know.

Live, learn, laugh (or cry).

The picture doesn't really show it well. I first saw this checking the gun shops with my son. I got the price down to 400.00, and my son really gave me trouble for the BLING GUN. I ended up not buying it. I went back a few days later to buy it and someone had put it on lay-a-way. About 6 months later I'm at Po Boys (real name, this IS the south) and asked about it. Charles told me it just came of lay-a-way for nonpayment. I asked if I could get it for 400.00 still and took it home.

It has a Fajen stock, Williams peep, high polish deep blue, color case hardened reciever, recoil block and trigger housing (really well done). Someone really spent some money on this old rifle. I actually bought it just because it is pretty, but it shoots good, too! I bought 200 rounds of milsurp ammo with it and went straight to the range.

Oddly enough, after my son left, my wife asked me if I had found anything I liked. I told her yes but I didn't get it. She sent me back to buy the thing. Is she a keeper?

Micky Rat-Is that dolled up carbine you posted a Universal? If so it's the first I've seen in years. Have you had any reliability problems with it or not? My M-1 Carbine is an Inland, one of the imports out of S.Korea a few yeas back. M-1 Carbines have remarkable histories and most of the people I've known that used them either loved them or hated them.

I killed a buck once with one at 25 yards using reloaded JSP's. He dropped but was alive and I fired again killing him with that one.

There was an article in the "Rifleman" a few months ago about an outfit I think was in Korea that was about to start selling remakes.  The writer was impressed with the authenticity of the carbines.  Real close to GI.  I'll try and find the acticle and give you some more detail.

k steve, probably it is about T3  type carbine, the one which is used during korean war as a short  range sniper rifle,  is there any modified / improvised parts than can be fitted on the reciever so that we can put a scope.

thanks

I always just used the GI iron.  I don't recall seeing one with a scope but I'm sure they must be out there.

The only M1carbine I've had was an old Universal.  It was'nt as good as the GI's I've shot but it did the job.  I think I only payed about $100 for it.  Of course that was in the 80's.

Hey Dimes,

I found the article.  It was in the Apr. 06 edition.  It was'nt Korean.  It's being made by Auto Ordinance in Mass..  The only thing wrong with it is they want over $700 for it!!  I know I don't want one that bad.  Check it out on their website.  I would've put up the link for you but my ignorance is showing.  I'm only computer semi-literate.    :stupid:

I used to have a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 carbine. Had all their blackhawks , in 45LC,.357,22-22 mag and a 5 screw 41 mag. Also a Super Blackhawk 44 mag. I lost my job when I was a kid and had to sell guns to pay rent :eek2: The 30 carbine to me was about like a 357 . It did have allot of blast ! The only one I have left is the SB 44 mag. Have allot of other Ruger's now though. Sorry for getting off subject...

This is my .30 Carbine Ruger Blackhawk. Melanie really loves this handgun because it's got a lot of power and blast, but very little recoil. I'm surprised Ruger doesn't sell more of them. Ammo isn't too expensive, and they make a nice companion piece to a M-1 Carbine.  Bill T.

I forgot I had already posted it. Dumb me. Ruger still catalogs it, and Davidsons shows several in stock as I type this. They seem to sell just enough of them to keep it in production. It's only offered in blue, which tells me sales aren't too great.  Bill T.

Dang Bill, that's good to know. I thought they quit making them a long time ago. Ammo is still cheap... Hmmmmmmm.... I always wanted to get another .22 convertable. In stainless maybe. Never did. I used to like my 45 LC allot too. I think it had a large frame like the Super BH .44 mag , didn't it ? They both had 7.5 in. barrels.

nice gun, about my querry, id like to put scope on my .30M1, but noted that there is no slot  on the receiver, like the M1C garand , they put some attachement on the left rear of the reciever for scope mounting, do you have any idea how to put scope on the .30m1

I'm not a gunsmith but I'm sure it could be drilled and tapped for mounts. Just would have to watch the ejection port I suppose. I bet it wouldn't cost much at all. I'm sure there are some old timers that will chime in that know a hell of allot more than me.     Don

I had one assigned to me in 1953  when I was stationed at MacDill AFB SAC.It was an M2 with a selector lever for semi or full had to go to the base range a couple of times but then it was stopped couldn't hit a bulls butt with it and most of the shooters put them on full auto and hit everyone elses target.I had police officer friends who used them on stakeouts in the early 70's with 2 fully loaded banana mags taped together.
