Hatchers book on the Garand has information about the M-1 carbine developement.it was supposed to have a more powerful cartridge but was reduced  due to production contracts to many manufacturers .

I have heard that the M1 Carbine killed more Japanese on Guadalcanal than any other arm. The reason for this is that the U.S. has just started installing infrared night vision scopes on them to use for night sniping.

The new night vision devices were to delicate to withstand the recoil from anything else we had at the time.

I read the history of the M1 carbine it was originally designed to fire loads of 2400fps from the original maker but the ammo was reduced in fps due to so many companies making them with mass production tolerances weren't as finite  so for safety the ammo was tamed down making them a bit less than ideal.I had an M2 assigned to me in 1953 at McDill AFB SAC I couldn't  hit a bull in the butt with it.When I was attending the Univ of AZ in the 1960's one could purchase an M1 carbine from the NRA for $13.95, 1911 Remington 45acp I bought for $14.95,(I was allowed $25 on the purchase of  a $58 S&W Chiefs Special 38 spec 5 shot snubbie when I moved to NYS in 1963)a 1903 or an 03A3 for $14.95 and a garand for a bit more. I was in college on the GI Bill getting $138/month so my wife didn't think we could afford $14.95 for an 03A3 or a 1903 Springfield I've reminded her of that many times over the years after buying $1500 + for 2  Sako rifles.
