Hi all.  Had the pleasure of visiting a couple old bombers this weekend.  Talk about guns gallore.  The first pic is the B17 landing.

Don't try sneaking up on this baby's behind.  B17 tail guns.

Better not be in front of her either.  More .50's are at the ready.

A look at the top turret.

View from the top turret looking at the B24.  (the glass was really dirty and smudged)

Here's the B17's bottom ball turret with the .50 caliber magazines.  The yellow cylinder is oxygen.

An outside view of the B17 ball turret.  Notice how small it is compared to the young man kneeling beside it.

On the B24 the ball turret rises into the plane for landing.

The B17 was somewhat easy to walk through compared to the B24.  Here's the bombay of the B24.

For $9 you could look all you want, and come the next day too.  Since the airport is only a mile away I took full advantage.  I went through the B17 twice and the B24 four times. (The B17 always had a long line)  Would love to take a ride but the 30 minute flight cost $425.  Even on the ground, what a blast to see and touch these old warbirds up close.  I did stay around to see them fire up the engines on the B17 and take off.  Too friggin' cool.......

INTERSTING FACTS: Originally the B-17 was suppose to be a coastal patrol plane, It was never intended to be a long range bomber, however necessity of war placed it into a role that it became famous for, the high altitude long range bomber! The B24 was refered to as the "incredible prostitute" seems the wings appear to be too small to support the aircraft, NO VISIBLE MEANS OF SUPPORT!, It was one of the first aircraft to use the high dihedral wing design that provide better lift and cut down on drag! Making it a very successful long rang heavy lift bomber! Can you imagine flying hanging out in that ball turret!

Nope.

Martin's B-26 (the Marauder, not the later A/B-26 Invader) was the flying prositute. The early A and B models were very hot aircraft for mediuum bombers at the time. Wingspan was short and wing loading was high, in relation to other medium bombers. Later models  had the wingspan increased. Handling was better, wingloading went down, but at the cost of speed.

The B-24 was the first production aircraft with the Davis high lift/low drag airfoil. Diheral is the positive angle between the wingroot and wingtip, anhederal (think F4 horizontal stabiliser) is the negative angle.

These are the guys who tour our country every year they fly in and give us a look see.  They were here not too long ago in my area too.  I was on my motorcyle a few years ago when they had a B17 and another one fly right over me while i was near the small airport were they landed.  I was going thru the corn fields on a road when they came in low it was awesome to see from my bike. It looked like i was watching a movie or going back in time, but it was in real present day time. One of my buddies wore his flight jacket with the orginal metals and they had to pry him off the plane after he took a ride.  He isn't a war vet he's too young but he is into collecting the ww2 stuff.  I thought that was really neat when they thru him off the plane, the butt head refused to leave just kidding around. I think the pilot got pissed at him because the pilot had fake repo metals and he had the real ones. My buddy can be a real jerk at times.

In my past life I had something to do with these planes because the sound of the engines is like music to my ears when i hear the radial piston engines running.

During the war we were sending 2,000 bombers a night to Japan thats a whole lotta "OUCH" isn't it or should i say "HURT".

My dad had a lot of those yellow oxy tanks they were surplused still brand new they were making them into gas tanks i think back then when was a little kid.

I dunno...those Wright Cyclones sound good, but nothing beats a Merlin. Best sound captured IMO is the opening scene of Battle Of Britain. Shot of a Hurricane scudding thru some clouds, then he pulls up and over his airfield. You can hear him throtle back as he does a slow roll....that rumbling backfire has no equal when it comes to music.

I was corresponding with a guy in Holland some years ago about an aviation issue. He told me as a kid, he could tell where  the bomber streams passed over by the oil sheen on the ground. There were enough aurcraft that they actually left a slight oil slick.

Charlie;  I get excieted and numb all over when i hear those radial piston engines just idling.  I have a gut feeling ion my past life i was in the war or had something to do with the planes maybe a mechanic?  I went to an aircraft museum and they had a cutaway of a Pratt Radial Engine and i knew how it was designed before i looked at it.  Why do i get this weird feeling when i get close to them or just hear them:confused: all the time.

Why not? As improbable as life itself is, why would reincarnation be any more improbable?
