You are about ten years late on the Swedes. They were very common, and cheap at that point. Now, it seems M1896s run $200 to $250 for a run of the mill one, and M38s about $100 more.  Still worth buying, they are great shooters, and the 6.5x55 is one of the best medium game hunting cartridges ever designed.

I know the 6.5x55 is really popular in Europe as a hunting round. Kind of like the 30-06 of Europe.

I would like to try one eventually.

This is arguably the best all around long range target-tactical round in existance.  I have 2 Swedes, one with a Midway kit the other stock.  They will easilly shoot 1/2 inch groups at 100 meters.

Hey all, I am new here, but just thought I would throw this out for ya.  I would gey with someone who has a curio and relics liscence, and get them to find one.  I had a friend here in Colorado get one for me, a 38, thencut it down and worked the original stock.  I then gave it to a friends son for hisfirst big game rifle.  He always loved shooting it, as it is target accurate and recoil is less than any of my 243's.  I have handloaded for it, and so far anything I have thrown at it will group at least 1.5 at 100, most good loads are about 1/2 to 3/8 for three rounds.  I wish sometimes  had kept it for myself!!!!!  But how do you keep a kid waiting!!!!??  You will love this rifle and cartridge if you fin one.  Every man I know loves to shoot that gun.  Even the magnum guro's!!!  Good luck.

This Swede was built about 13 years ago for my wife.  Fajen Aristocratic stock, Bold trigger with Rem type safety, replaced original barrel with a new in white Mauser barrel.  It does prefer 140 grainers.

I'm kind of torn when I see miltary rifles cut to make sporters. On one hand, I've done it myself with certain rifles and actions. On the other hand, I hate to see historical artifacts destroyed. At least it makes mine increase in value.

The one that I had made into a sporter, already had been taped for a scope, and had the bolt handle turned down.  It was not turned down enough for a real scope, but the historical damage was already done.  It is a shame to destroy a really fine specimine, but this one was not virgin!  Made the choice very easy!

Charley.....

I feel you pain.

I've seen some really butchered Mausers and Enfields sporterized.  Even bought one at the last big Tulsa Gun Show with Poacher.  That one will be given a rebirth into something to be proud of when finished.

I look at a rifle or handgun as being a tool.   Not worth alot hanging over the mantle.  I have a cherry Remington-Rand 1911A1.  Bought it out of an estate where it had set in a collection of over 40 years.  Replaced the Ivory grips someone had put on it with a set of Pachmyers.  It's my Go-To handgun.  And I've lost track of how many hundreds of rounds I've put thru it in the past 6 years.

And according to the prices seen on R-R's at the last show.....it's still worth more then all the other guns in my safe combined.  But, it's still a tool to be used.

I guess if I ever trip over a Mauser or Enfield that I consider exceptional, I'd probably keep in intact.  But I've yet to find one that wasn't priced above my nose bleed attitude.

I was kinda hesitating even to mention that. Guns are tools, and they are intended to be used. I've never been one of those "handle it with cotton gloves, and for God's sake don't cock it and shoot it " kind of guys.  The stuff I've built has all been based on a rifle or action that someone else already hacked, for the most part.

I've got five milsurp rifles in 6.5x55, one M1896, one M1896/38, two M/38s, and an AG42B (Llungman).

I've got one sporterized M1896,bought it that way. Barrel cut to 20', turned down bolt, drilled and tapped, etc.

Really, really like the cartridge.

A few years back I purchased every decent looking swede i seen at gun shows and i managed to get some from Samco Global Arms before they dried up completely.  I have my first 1907 Carl Gustaf M96 that shoots awesome if i do my part.  I been using new sellier & bellot ammo and getting 1 1/2" groups @ 100yds. Its the only swede that i shoot out of my collection.  I managed to get a Carl Gustaf M96 with a turned down bolt from samco before they ran out too.  Just two years ago i went to look at some guns a local guy had for sale and he brought out my holy grail of swede rifles.  It was a CG M96 with range plate and all matching numbers the metal and the wood serial numbers all match.  These are worth around $400 now. Its a safe queen too.

These two mid bore calibers of 6,5x55 swede and 7x57 mauser are two great shooters.  There is a low recoil to them so you can shoot them all day long with no harm to the body and there very accurate too.

For a while these were at gun shows for around $200/$225 and in decent condition too.  I have seen some with out of wack prices too that were dragged behind a truck for miles too.

Another mauser i figured i would never see or have is an all matching numbered chilean 95 7mm mauser.  I happen to spot one behind a sellers table at a local gun show.  It has the most awesome fiddleback/tiger striped stock i have ever seen on a chilean mauser.  I grabbed it quick too.  Even the bolt number matches the wood and the receiver too.  Having the bolt number match is rare too.

Don't pass up any of these awesome mausers.  I have a safe full of 6,5mm swede's/7mm chilean/ 7mm spanish mausers.  A few year back I also managed to pick up a 1908 brazilian 7mm mauser w/bayo(long barrel) $150.  Shortly after the prices on these went sky high too.  I like the short barrel one too but there too expensive right now.

Another way to find these is when an older collector is trading his stuff in.  I have gotten some great deals on stuff like that too.  My local dealer just dumps the older stuff for what he paid for it. Its a matter of staying looking and being in the right place at the right time to score a deal.

I picked up on a sweet M-96 last fall. The barrel is in GREAT shape and the brass armory tag gave it a 6.49 / 1  rating

I've been working on a maple stock for it, and I want to use it for yotes.

The original stock is in good shape, and I'm stashing it for now. I'm also keeping the barrel in its original configuration till I see how she shoots. If it handles like I think it's going to,.. the iron ramp will go and a set of rings and a scope will find its way on her.

The numbers aren't all matching so I'm not going to fret over overhauling her if I choose to. The barrel even has a threaded flash supperssor on it.

i'm hoping to have it finished up by this winter.

Not threaded for a flash suppresor, but a blank firing device. Swedish blanks had a wooden bullet, the BFD shredded them so nothing went downrange.

Intresting that Numrich cautions you not to use standard (ball) ammunition with it! I supose that's for all the FT that might order one...

Nope,.. it's not the same device.

The one on my barrel has a OPEN end on it. It isn't a closed end as the one in the link you provided.

I'm currently at work,.. but when I get home I'll take a picture of it and post it. It's a fully functional open ended suppressor.

I been building surplus military sporters but i'm using parts to build them not complete guns.  I find barreled receivers or guns with the barrels shotout that are dogs and restore them.  I use the orginal wooden stocks so they keep that military look.  I even found the 3 post military style scopes too brand new for just $29.95. I built a german 98k 8mm mauser, a 7mm chilean mauser and a 7,62x54 mosin nagant so far all scoped with good barrels.  I haven't purchased any swede parts to build one yet.  I won't touch a complete swede rifle to build one.

I been also buying decent looking military stocks when i see them too.  This stuff is getting harder to find.

If your looking for a swede rifle go to every gun show you have in your area and stay going sooner or later the'll show up.  I have been to shows that had nothing at all too.  Then at one gun show they had 3 svt-40's, 4 egy hakims, 6 fn49's, sks's and swedish mausers too all at one gun show.  Here's the skibby it was a fall gun show these are the best to go to and they have everything.  I think with the economy the way it is the fall and winter gun shows will have everything were looking for just bring plenty of cash with you.  Its going to be a buyers market now so remember to haggle.

If you haven't found a Swede go to http://www.empirearms.com/.  They are advertising several plus other Mausers.  they are asking around 350 for them.

I inherited a M96, barrel not too great.  Shot it the other day at 500 yds using reloads.  PMC cases, Winchester LR primer, 38 gr IMR 4064, 140 Gr Sierra Spitzer, OAL 3.050" with cases trimmed to 2.155".   Hit a 3" gong with the first shot with iron sights.  Had a friend with me who confirmed the shot.

Hope you find/found one.  Enjoy.

When i first got into collecting i thought finding any swedish 6,5mm mauser was going to be a hard find.  But i stayed browsing and they seem to pop up one at a time at gun shows, pawn shops and gun shops just never give up looking.

The swedish 6,5mm mauser and the chilean 7mm mauser you can shoot all day long because of the very low recoil plus there very accurate and still have the power too.  The mid bore mausers are awesome.
