I don`t have one at the moment.I figure there are a few owners here.Who`s got one and do you reload for it?I`ve often wondered how much accuracy could be obtained from one with a good handload and optics.

I've got 3 of them, bought as defensive weapons. Not particularly accurate, but they'll do for the purpose they were bought.
The 7.62X39 is the only centerfire I have that I don't reload for. I can't reload them for the price of new ammunition.

SKS.
Decent battle rifle for sure as far as durability. There's enough room in the action housing to hold half a handful of sand and still work! Easily field stripped, though magazine conversions from issue to civilian can be a little tricky.
But the price is accuracy I think. With the mil-surp ammo I can hold 5-6 inch groups at 100 with open sights o.k. but not acceptable to me. Trigger has a lot of travel though pull weight probably hovers around 4-5 lbs.
I've got a die and reloadable winchester brass but I honestly don't know why I'll probably never hunt with it and it keeps guard over the workshop of a night. Fun gun and could probably be decently accurate with a properly mounted scope. 100 yard deer/boar gun perhaps. Otherwise, it's just plain fun to shoot

My brother started his deer hunting career with an SKS. He had mounted a scope on it and zeroed it out back. He wanted to borrow my 30-30 to take. I told him to just go get some decent SP/HP ammo for it and corret his zero. He did and dropped his first deer with a head shot. By the end of the season, he had graduated to 7mm mag. 7mm mag was too tough on recoil (he has a bad right shoulder). Eventually setteled on a Browning BAR w/Boss in 243. Ths SKS was relegated to the closet.
I've got 2. Both with scopes. One is in an Advantage Stock, and the other is straight stock. Groups run 2-3 inches with Wolf. I've never bothered with decent ammo. Too many other choices.

my Hunting buddys kids all started hunting deer with a SKS,and he still uses one for a hog gun. I have 2 SKS's and tehy are fun little guns to shoot and the cost to shot them is just right.
I might try one out for a Hog gun .

I have to be honest about sks's here. When i got my very first Chinese Norinco SKS we would always just blast away with and we never worried about the accuracy and we would just pepper the target at 100yds or wipe out a few soda cans as I'm sure most do too. I put a scope on it and I have a few cases of the orginal Chinese Norinco FMJ ammo so we headed off to the range to benchrest it. With my last few shots of sighting it in, before the scope mount(thumb screws) came loose it was shooting around 1" groups which impressed me. I took out the thumb screws and i drilled and tapped screws into the reciever so its solid now. I haven't had the time to try it but i'm sure it will go back to where it was. Recently I picked up a Chinese Norinco SKS Paratrooper from a local gun shop salesman, it was his personal sks and we benchrested it also with the orginal open sites and it shoots 1 1/2" groups @100yds. with chinese ammo too. I was even pinging small rocks on the berm at 100yds too. I went back to the gun shop and asked him if he did any work on the sks he sold me and he said no and he added that every sks he has shot did shoot the same 1 1/2" to 2" groups it was the norm. I think these guns are way under estimated on how accurate they can shoot. I have to admit when i first heard of a Sniper SKS i laughed but after seeing what we could do with them they don't shoot too bad. I guess the quality of the ammo really matters too. And of course you have to watch what diameter ammo you send down the pipe too if you reload. Plus you have to watch what new ammo you buy too some is .308" while the imported ammo is .310"/.311" this is what the gun is made for so that could be why your accuracy is off too.
