If you don't own a military surplus rifle I think you should have at least one or a few!!!!  While they are very affordable to buy and shoot right now.  You can buy a Russian Mosin 91/30,  M38 or M44 right now for way under $100.  And you have a choice of shooting cheap 7,62x54 FMJ ammo or the new Russian Wolf or Barnaul made 7.62x54 soft point ammo which costs between $5 to $8 a box.  You will find out something that most of the military surplus shooters and collectors know too these guns are really accurate too.  Think about it a rifle under $100 with affordable ammo  its a cheap game getter and can put meat on your table too.  My point is these guns won't be around too much longer the supplies are running out soon and the prices will go up.  You have the chance to own, to handle and shoot & hunt with a piece of history at under $100.  Lets face it you can't buy much for a $100 these days.  There's more great military surplus guns out there too like Finnish M39 mosins, .303 Enfields and Yugo 8mm mausers too while they just may cost you a few $$ more they sure do shoot good.  I covered the bolt actions.

Now for the military surplus semi-auto rifles there one good buy out there right now too its the Yugo sks its still affordable and supplies will be running out on these too soon.  They come in different conditions and price ranges but you can have a shooter grade for around $99 right now.  And a newer looking one for around $149.  You can beat the price of new ammo for these too 1,000rds of 7.62x39 FMJ 122gr. ammo is under $100.   Thats 50 boxes of ammo for plinkin or varmit hunting.   The russian Wolf ammo company also makes the 7.62x39 ammo in 154gr SP bullet too and its for up to deer sized game too.  When you were younger you can remember your very first semi-auto 22lr plinker??  Now that your grown up this is a step up from your first 22 its more fun, the empty soda cans will jump a little higher and the bang is a little louder too and its still cheap to shoot too.

Don't miss out on these affordable great shooters before their gone for good!!!!

BTW;  If you buy or own an SKS you have to disassemble the bolt to clean the firing pin bore by removing the firing pin. There is no short cut you have to take it apart to clean it good so slam fires won't occur by the firing pin sticking.  Even if the firing pin is loose it can stick at anytime if not properly cleaned. The gun must be decosmolined completely too even the gas system has to be squeeky clean too.  I say this because i have purchased used guns that still looked new and i have found the gas systems fouled up and stuck with melted cosmoline from improper cleaning from when they were brand new.  They were probably shot only once and stuck and then traded in because they didn't work.  Its great for me I got a brand new gun that only needed a good cleaning at a cheap price too.  These guns will give us plenty of years of service if we clean and lube them properly.                                            BigBill

It was actually a member here,Rob1 that gave me the idea of using a VZ24 action after he gave me a  tip on where to purchase some affordable actions. The rifle should be just about finished.I am happy with the conversion..

Thats a good action to start off with.  I just put together two mausers to hunt with. One was a German 98K 8mm mauser I purchased with a shotout barrel for $20.  I recieved a used barrel that was "like new in excellent condition" for $37 from numrich gun parts.  I refinished the orginal German stock with Solar lux stain and 10 coats of tung oil.  I also picked up a military style 3 post 6x42 scope from CDNN and the see thru mounts from Samco.  My next project mauser was a 1895 chilean 7mm 29" barreled reciever i purchased from Samco for $89.  I ordered a stock with hardware from Numrich Gun Parts and i assembled it with a military style 3 post 6x42 scope also.  Both project guns cost me under $200 each and i have two decent hunters or plinkin rifles.  I plan on using the 7mm for yotes soon.                        BigBill

You guys changed the caliber and thats what i wanted to do too with my german 98k but I thought it over for quite sometime and I figured with all the surplus 8mm ammo I have squirreled away I went with the orginal 8mm round.  I also figured i could use the cheap surplus 8mm FMJ ammo for varmits besides plinkin too.  I still want to build a 98 mauser in a wildcat or smaller round but i'm not sure which one yet.   I have to find another mauser in sad shape needing repair.  Since i have so many big bores I'm leaning towards a smaller bore caliber.  I like the 6,5 swede and 7mm mauser rounds but i would like just a tad more in power.  I just not sure which one yet the 25-06 is becomming very popular lately and whats that 6,5-08 all about it sounds interesting too??  This gun building just may catch on with me.                   BigBill
