| I build lots of AR's in various versions. I'm interested in building a hunting rifle based on an AR 5.56 lower. Trying to find out the best upper caliber that will fit this lower. Oly Arms has a 243 wssm and 25 wssm and 6.8mm spc. According to my research, the 6.8mm drops like a rock. Any thoughts on the 25 wssm and the 243 wssm for deer???

| my understanding is the 6.8 spc has the same trajectory as a .308 (7.62 nato) I've never heard of that round dropping like a rock!

| Hi, thanks for the response. I have only looked at the Remington site ballistic sheets. With 200 yard zero's, and drops @ 500yds, it has the 6.8 spc 115gr drop at 68". A .308 with 150 gr. drop at 55". I show the 25wssm with a 115 gr. drop at only 37". Granted, the 308 weighs heavier. I really want something in the short action 5.56 AR with the biggest cartridge I can get. Do you know of any other calibers I can get in the 5.56 lower, that's big?

I think the 308 drops 35 feet at 1000 yards. Sounds like a pretty big number doesn't it. Its only 42 minutes though.

| .50 Beowulf, Bushmaster .450 Thumper. Those are the two biggest short actions that come to mind.

| Have you considered the 204 ruger? Pretty hot loads and i know a few guys using them with great results on the Texas White tail.

The 25 WSSM would be my choice, very flat shooting and with the 100 Barnes TX-S or the 100 gr Nosler Part would be good for any game up to 500 lb's.

| I have looked at the 243WSSM and the 25WSSM uppers from Olympic. I believe that you can get a complete upper for either caliber from Midway. I own a 223WSSM and so does my brother. Mine is a single shot Cooper so I don't have any feeding problems. My brothers is a Browning A bolt II and he has had feeding problems with any hollow point round. Now a bolt is a lot different from an AR upper but I wonder if the WSSM uppers have any feeding problems. If not I would also be interested in them.

yheah ,have an 25wssm oly upper ,use 100 grainers, very flat shooting. killed whitetail last year with it . had called sierra about bullet weight . He said "If you want to drop em in there tracks use 100gr." shot a three(3) shot group yesterday at 130 yards could probaily cover with a dime. didn't measure it , used imr 7828 an sierra match...... feeds just as smooth as 223 or m1a, you have to full length resize hard! had to hire Mike Milli to flute the barrel last june. call him@ 1-218-444-7419 he will make you one, in 223 ,243,257,6.5,an maybe 375, all wssm ,not to mention 204 ruger, 20 vartag, 17rem. I fill like , I have 25/308?, in a handier package than an Ar10 . it holds the same amount of propellant. a little less than 25/06 , I realy luv mine , xx
