I usually keep an eye on ammo prices and did a weekly browse thru most inter stores to watch the price of ammo and who had it the cheapest or on sale.  I mainly found "out of stock" on most of the cheaper stuff(wolf in 308/223/7,62x39)  I see that what was once very affordable imported ammo has gone much higher now too.(russian barnaul).  I have heard that the russian made barnaul ammo was a tad more accurate than the wolf ammo is too.  Even the surplus militray ammo is going for much higher too now.  They seem to add the word "sniper" or "match grade" to it so it multiplies the price.  The Priv-partizan made in former yugoslavia by the box seems to be the best buy for small amounts of new ammo for plinking.

I must correct myself too;  Priv-Partizan manufactures ammo for Wolf (gold), Igman & FNM too.

A few years ago we talked on another forum about the surplus stuff drying up.(guns/ammo)  Soon after we seen the 8mm surplus military ammo starting to dryup. At almost the sametime some of the military guns started to dryup too.  Its been down hill ever since.  I been wondering if the european union has something to do with this happening here.  I'm starting to believe they would rather smash it than send it here to arm us more.

My point is get your reloading equipment now if you haven't started yet while its still affordable!!!!

The "sticker shock" is indeed an eye opener BigBill. I'm so glad I bought what I did when I did.

What are you guys stocking up on? I remember the primer scare when slick Willy first came into office. I'm seeing some stuff ease up now on the market but prices between 50% to 100% higher.

I took delivery last week for some 53 year old military surplus 7.62.54r sealed in an air tight can. Ain't she beautiful? $102.44 for 600 rounds.

Commercialy loaded ammunition has always been expensive. Relatiovely speaking ammunition was much more expensive in the 1970s, when I bought my first centerfire revolver. I recall paying almost $20/ box for .38 Specials and .357 magnums. I can buy it now for less, and the dollar involved is worth much less. The US manufacturers had it all their way, becuase of import restrictions on surplus, and there was nobody else able to tool up. The South Koreans, as PMC, broke the monopoly, and helped usher in a time of cheaper ammunition. The surplus flood helped a lot as well, although that was a bit later.

Anyway, I started handloading after paying thru the nose for those first centerfires, been doing it ever since. I've got the makings in brass, primers, and powder fior about 5000 to 6000 rounds of handgun and rifle ammunition. About 1500 pounds of lead alloy, and planty of bullet molds. I shoot fewer and fewer jacketed bullets anyway, I could get by with 100% cast, if needed.

I remember my 30-06 hunting ammo being around $7 a box that was many years ago.  Not too long ago my 338win mag ammo was just $20 and i complained about that its hitting near $50 now.  When i was shooting heavy 3 to 5 times a week i was hand cuffed to my reloader the rest of the time.  After a while of doing that i felt like a dog chasing its tail.  This was around the time that surplus ammo was expensive and hard to find.  When the doors opened for the import of surplus military ammo my reloader took a vacation.  It was great to shoot cheap and leave the brass on the ground.  We can all say those were the good olde days i guess with whats going on now.  I don't think we'll ever seen those days again, its a whole new ball game now.

Wolfkill, have you shot any of your "new" yellow tip ammo yet? If I'm not mistaken, the yellow tip designates "heavy ball". Might be a real kicker in a Mosin- Nagant.

No shoot yet. I did a bunch of Internet research first regarding rumors it's made for machine gun only and too hot for rifle but it's ok and....oh yaaaaa it gonna kick.

Seems to have rave reviews on the Internet by those that do shoot it. I ordered another 600 rounds. Ammo is just like gasoline I'd say...ain't no where for it to go but up in price now.

I do think ammo is an achilles heel for most. Most of the gun owners I know up here would be lucky to scrape together 100 rounds for their shotgun and hunting rifle. I'll never forget the primer scare when Slick Willie came into office. Not for one year could I buy primers. And they dried up almost overnight.

On clearance a while back I got the 30-06 russian made barnaul ammo for just $1.99 a box of 20.  I haven't tried it yet but i heard there 7,62x39 ammo was very accurate.

After one of the last ammo shortages we had i grabbed many cases(880rds) of czech 7,62x54r  for $82 delivered to my door.  I still have a case of norinco(chinese 7,62x54r too.  Right after that the 7,62x39 ammo was just $59 for 1,000rds.  We talk about the old days of cheap ammo..........already....

Recently i was buying 223 wolf at $99 a 1,000rd case.  Now its over $200...

I did purchase all my dies for every caliber i have in the LEE brand too for my rockchucker RCBS press.  A while back i ran 6k of 308 using there $9 dies without a problem..

Luckily grafs has the brass for most military calibers now.  Some guys are even reloading berdan primed brass too i been thinking about doing that too or at least setting up for it.  Who knows what the future will be?  If "hellary" gets in it may even get worse.
