I am curious how the factory 150 gr. Winchester Silvertip will function in an M1 Garand.  I have an old NATO issued Greek Army piece that I want to try out at a range, but they don't allow the steel core or steel-washed ammo on the range, and I'm a little short on the type that I normally load right now.  I've never messed with silvertip type rounds in my reloads.

Will my Wally World purchased factory ammo function correctly, or will the relatively soft nose create some loading problems?

Thank you in advance for any insights into this matter!

I have never shot Winchester Silver Tips in either of my Garands. But I have shot a lot of handloaded Remington pointed soft points. I have never had any type of bullet that I have handloaded fail to function in the Garands. These handloads have run the gamut from 110 grain bulk Speer hollow points to 180 grain Remington PSPs.

I really doubt that you will have a problem with the Silver Tips.

I have loaded Nosler 165gr BT's using 47.5gr of IMR 4895 to use for a successful mule deer hunt. This is a powder that has been in use for garands for a very long time. The trouble with off of the shelf ammo is you haven't a clue what powder is in the case since it's not one a reloader can purchase. When I started shooting in CA a group of former WW2 veterans told me what powder to load for my 06 semis been doing it for over 3 decades.I've also loaded Hornaday 150gr FMJ using 48.5gr of IMR 4895 for my garand.I have an article from the March 1986 American Rifleman titled Reloading For The M1 Rifle that has a lot of useful information and load data with powders that are ideal for the garand,if you want a copy send me your home address and I'll mail you a copy.

Thanks for the info, 72coupe and sako06.

I just wanted to know if factory rounds will work (safely) in a pinch, when taking the gun to the range, and I have my answer.

But I could sure use any info from the NRA publication about recommended handloads for the rifle as well!  I'll forward my address to sako06.

John
