Hi, all -

Does anybody have recommendation of Overall length for handloading a 147 gr. Winchester FMJ Boattail bullet in the good ol' M1 Garand .30-06?

It's not like the bullet is hard to find; but I've looked high and low, consulted various manuals, visited several load sites, checked the CMP site - and can't find a specific COAL - I'm stuck on guessing between 3.2 something and Max of 3.340 inches!

:whiteflag:

Any help is appreciated.

Just load it to the cannelure. If you load it 3.34 there will not be much of the bullet in the case.

I do one of two things. Seat bullet with at least one bullet diamter of neck engagment and make sure they will fit into magazine well in the clip

Great!

Wheezengeezer, you are right on as always (military spec bullets);

Saddlesore, I'll remember your one bullet diameter technique for unknown, non-cannelured bullets!  In fact, I'm putting these posts into a pdf file for my archives on the M1 Garand.

72coupe - the cannelure crimp makes sense - just like other rifle rounds.  I just was not sure with these rounds in a GI-isssue Garand, with all the talk about its limitations versus a bolt-action.

As I get up from the keyboard, I'll be reloading a batch today for tomorrow's big event.

Iit's the first time this year that I can spend a whole day at the range - and I have a couple of sacks of this bullet.  We can't fire military (magnetically active) bullets, so I would otherwise have not been allowed to take my M1, never yet fired at distances over 20 yards!

Sincere thanks for the quick and authoritative answers - now I can have a fun day.

I think you will find that the M1 is not sensitive to bullet length as long as it is shorter than 3.34. They are not very sensitive to charge weight either. I have shot charge weights of 4895 powder from a maximum of 50 grains to as little as 30 grains and my old war horse runs 100%.

In my opinion there is nothing more fun to shoot than an M1.

If you are a tinkerer, there are good instructions for doing a do it yourself trigger job at nationalmatch.us.

Be careful. Have fun.

Well, I loaded to the middle of the crimp using new Winchester brass and the aforementioned Winchester 147 gr. FMJ BT.  Would you believe a scarce 2.290" ?  That was quite a surprise.

That sounds pretty short since the trim to length on a 30/06 case is 2.484.
