I have owned an M1 Carbine and currently own a nice AR15HBAR NM, but would would make a good carbine to carry around with me on the farm? THis rifle would also have to be carried in a scabbard on my John Deere now and then. Think less expensive.

While out in the fields, I do carry a 45 ACP or a 9mm or 357 Mag. on my hip.

Even thou I don't like them, maybe an SKS? I do have a Marlin 336 in 30-30 as well as other lever guns, but I am think surplus for this one.

What do you guys carry as a knock about for a rifle?

Jerry

I think that the SKS is pretty tough to beat as a farm gun. Three things that stand out most for me would be a hearty one piece stock,  legal for deer in just about all states where you can fire a center fire cartrige and  reliable.

Although I do understand that you are a veteran of Viet Nam and could certainly understand if you didn't care for this particular firearm based on your past relationship.

Steel,

There are more techical reasons that I don't like the SKS and some current politics. I would like to have the bayonet on it, the ammo it shoots is a not always that good. I would spend a few extra bucks to get some of the accessories for it. Maybe that after market setup so it could use AK mags.

If loaded my own for this, there would be two different 7.62 x 39 rounds that I would load, I have a Mini 30 that has a .308 bore and I have never shot any milspec surplus thru it.

Jerry ,if you already have a mini 30, I think you wouldn't have to look past your own rifle rack to find the gun your looking for. Ruger did call these guns Ranch Rifles didn't they?

In my truck I carry a Mini-14. On my UTV, in a scabbard, I carry a M94 Trapper in .357 Magnum. Works for me.

When out and about, my Winchester 94 cut to trapper length is always there. Light, well balanced, and easy to carry. Flatsides fit in a scabard easily, too.

It's a .30/30, BTW.

Charlie,

That may be the way I go, but with a Marlin 94, and maybe in 45 LC or 45 ACP.

Thanks,

Jerry

oh I see, your just looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle. Sorry I didn't catch on sooner. Yes by all means get a trapper, preferable one each caliber, just to make sure you have your bases covered. LOL

Like someone needs any encouragement to buy an new bang stick.

For a shooter/beater truck/tractor gun the sks is hard to beat its proven an all weather gun already.  It can really take a beaten too.  Thats hard to beat.

Get some barnaul 7.62x39 ammo its said to be the most accurate ammo in the sks.

Jerry I had an original once upon a time (1970) and it was all chrome with brass heat sheild on top and gold plated trigger. It looked like a Matel Toy. It also had two 30 round banana clips that were tack welded together and they too were chromed. I got tried of shooting rats around the barn (about all it was good for really) and the accuracyi was not top shelf for groundhog hunting at 200 yards. So I traded it in on a 700 BDL Remington 6mm with bull barrel. I got a much better target rifle in that deal.

Hi Ball,

I was think of something along that vein, I have a Spanish FR8 in 7.62 NATO, but I was also thinking of a 700 BDL in 243 and cut the barrel down to a Carbine Length. Or just break down and buy a Marlin in 357 or 44 Mag.

I do have a Win 94 on the work bench, its in 45 ACP, but the people I bought it from put in the basement when the orginial owner died, I bought it for a couple of hundred. It needs striped. refinished, a couple of new spings and some TLC to get it back to where it would be a really nice rifle. It is marked 45LC and some one did a nice conversion job on it.

Now if people would learn to take care of there guns, these fine weapons would not need so much work.

Jerry

If your looking for a good buy on a 243, take look at the Rem model 770. I bought one for my kids .pretty cheap as far as bolt guns go and I was fairly impressed with the accuracy. + it comes with a scope. I got mine used for  $150.

Thats a great deal. I have been shooting 243 for a number of years, and have cast bullets for it. Plus many long years ago, when I had good eye sight and no money, I took a deer at 175 yards with a Sierra 75 grain bullet.

That brings back memories.

Depending on what you want to do with it, I'd suggest a couple options --

1)  Ishapore Enfield 2A in 7.62 NATO -- you'll probably want to run only 7.62 Milsurp through it or handloads equivalent thereof.  Cheap, reliable, detachable mag for easy loading/unloading.  Probably too heavy for dismounted carry, but for a tractor gun, I'd call it a good choice.

2)  Spanish 1916 Civil Guardia Mauser in 7.62 NATO-- certainly these have gotten a lot of bad press for supposed weak actions.  I load only cast for mine, so I don't have to worry about the weak action consideration.  Its short, light and cheap.  That would be my choice for dismounted work.  You could probably handload FLGCs to get ballistics out of it, but that's another topic.

$.02 deposited.

Jerry when you say carry around the farm, do you mean it would be in the truck on the tractor or when your walking round checking things out on the farm?

Now I learned a long time ago NOT to put any rifles in a scarbard for very long as they will RUST! On horseback going up the mountain fine but other wise I like them out and not covered.

The 45-LC you mentioned would a great one for selfdefense situation but not for shooting a groundhog or coyote 150 yards across a beanfield. I much favor the .243 calbier for that kind of work.

I carried a 25-06 around our place for over a decade, until I went to the 6.5/06 in a bolt action with scope on the rifle.....making it more heavy of course. It was ok riding in the truck but nothing was a handy as a lever gun like my 444 Marlin, it takes on ALL Critters you betcha.

My buddy has a little Savage in a .243 caliber that he cut the barrel down on, it is 20 inches and puts in the cab of the tractor when out in the field. It is real handy but at night time looks like a flame thrower.

I walk my fields almost every day, with a 45 on my hip, some times a lever gun, some times a bolt gun. I do not carry a rifle on my tractor and I don't own an ATV. I borrow a horse once in a while.

i am guessing the ar15 is 223 cal and you want something more substancial? a 16 inch 7.62x39 upper and a small cap mag and a sling would make it a very handy and easy to carry "ready for deer "rifle.there are a lot of bigger options as well.
