Appreciate it, Thanks

I have all issues since the early 80's. I found the 3/86 issue and the article. I have copy of it in my M1 file too.

Also have copies of:

Exploded Views US M1 Garand, Fe 99

Zeroing M1 Service Rifles Feb 97

Accurizing the M1 Rifle, July 84

Making the mM1 Sight Competitive, April 88

US Rifle, Cal, 30,M1 Undated

Rifle, U.S. Cal. 30., M1 National Match, Undated.

I don't know if these will scan very welll or not,and it may be a few days before I go in to town to make a copy. I'm aways out

Thanks saddelsore. I have Scott Duff's "The M1 Garand: Owners Guide" and it is faily conprehensive for a begining Garand shooter. It will probably take me a while to figure out its accuracy potential.

It is a 43 SA reciever with a new Criterion Barrel, from the Garand Guy. I bought it last summer. I have installed a Shuster adjustable gas cylinder lock screw. I got a moose with it last August. It is a great moose rifle.

I used factory 180gr Rem. Bronze Tip and Core-lokt. I've only heard it go ping about five times with the factory fodder and have been working up loads with Sierra 180gr Pro Hunters using Varget. That was before I got three pounds of H4895. The Varget worked ok but didn't fill the case. I have been influenced by Lee Products and the idea of filling cases. I left the gas plug at the commercial ammo setting and have been working up loads untill the action/bolt cycles. I watch for preassure signs as I go.

It has been a long, cold and busy winter with work and familly. I havn't had a chance to load and shoot. Oh well maybe this spring after Break-Up.

Moosefat. The 4895 is THE powder for the Garand in the 150 gr bullet weight. Varget might be a good choice. 3031 does a good jobthoug out the sprectrum, but for a heck of a lot of years everyone shooting garands has used 4895. This is one rifle, you don't want to use a slower powder with that would get you a full case  as you would take a chance on bending the operating rod.

Have you measured your gas plug and gas cylinder. If they are not up to spec ,you won't get advertised velocities.

The article you asked about only list Sierra matchkings fo competition, but for 180 gr , you should be some where in the 46-47 gr of 4895, and 44-45 gr of 3031, looking for about 2650fps

Moosefat. If you have not done so yet, I would reccomend two things.

Firstis get  some 168-172 gr  Match Kings and work up a load to see what is the accuracy potential of your rifle. Then after you know that, select the bullet you wan't to use and go from there.

Rework your rear sight per the article I quoted, or put a National Match sight on it.

Reworking it is fairly simple you add some shim stcok between the sight slide and the reciever and use galss bedding compound to take up any latreal slack in the side and rails it goes into

Thanks again saddlesore, I will try Match Kings, good idea. I'm sure I'll have more questions.
