Watched History Channel's Lock and Load the other night, with R.L. Ermey. Topic was automatic weapons. One of the featured pieces was a Fusil-Mitrailleur 1915, AKA the Chauchat.

Talked about what a POS it was, how prone to stoppages, etc. (Didn't mention it was among the first or was the first automatic rifle, and somewhat pushed into production because of wartime expediency before bugs were worked out).

I can forgive that, but saying the cartridge it was chambered for was the "8.5 Lebelle" was just plain stupidity/stupidity and laziness on the part of the writers and researchers.

Maybe History Channel should stick to Ice Road Truckers, whatever the Hell that has to do with history...

The problem with a gaffe like that is that it erodes your confidence in the whole shebang.

Like when a mystery writer talks about the cop taking the safety off his revolver. Arghh!
