Hello all,

I have always wanted a M-1 Carbine, I have been looking around and have seen many makers of this. I can understand this due to WW2 and the different manufacturers.

I am looking for a shooter not a collection piece. I know the IBM, Winchester, and Postal Meter, etc. ones bring big dollars. What I am trying to avoid is the cheap knock offs that were made in the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Which company's should I avoid? Universal? Iver Johnson? etc.

Thanks for your help.

Jeff / Slingshot

Have had several including a Universal. I would not buy another U. as it is just not as heavy construction as the wartime Carbines. You should still be able to find one for 3-400 dollars. Some are bringing nearly double that but you can still find a bargain if you are willing to wait a bit. Carefully open the bolt to check the slack. Some are shot out and the actions are very loose. Check the bore for pitting and the condition of the lands. Other than that they are very reliable shooters and something you can hand down to your kids. wc

I had an Iver Johnson and Winchester build M1 Carbines. That was back in the 70s. Both shot well, but I was around many older NCOs and officers that were about ready to retired that would give me all sort of magazines, pouchs, ammo, what ever they found when packing up their stuff.

For me these were rabbit guns, good for rabbit hunting, and cheap to shoot at the time.

The Winchester was the collectors piece, where the Iver Johnson was a new manufacture. Parts did interchange to a point.

Enjoy,

Jerry

Check the CMP site. They have originals for sale at a reasonable price. At least from the CMP you can be fairly certain you are getting the real thing.

There is a Universal Carbine on Gun broker that I was thinking of bidding on its starting at 425.00 so its pretty cheap. Like I said its for shooting / plinking not for collect ability.
