Late last fall my yard-5.5 acres-was dug up about 1/2" deep by  two or three foot across.I am guessing skunks were after grubs????Any thoughts?????These dug up areas were scattered all over no concentrated area to speak of.

Hey hoashooter, I'm having the same problem bud. But there are no skunks in this area, ''to sandy'' for them. I would like also to know what the hell is doing it. It started right after deer season.

Without knowing where you are, it is tough to guess. Armadillos do a lot of damage here in Texas to turf. Sometimes, but not often, even possums and skunks will root up a yard, looking for insects.

usually skunks do that stuff... but, last fall, we had a buck that did that stuff. massive patches of grass were uprooted and turned over - far more than a skunk, or even a herd of skunks could do. there is a marked lack of trees in s.d., so near as we could tell, it was done in lieu of rubbing trees.

Only time I seen skunks do that was to get at an underground beehive.

It was less than 5 feet from the back door of the house, so it made me a little uneasy, but the skunk did his job just fine, and was a ninja about it. Never saw him in action, but I didn't exactly make it a point to try to catch him in the act!!

He opened it up a little the first night, and disturbed the bees. Nasty ground bees, it didn't break my heart at all to see them go, esp. with them being so close to a high traffic area.

The second night he must have been busy, because the hive was GONE! It was dug to a depth of 2 feet deep and maybe a 2 foot diameter. There were tracks all over the yard where he dragged off a small section of the hive, ate the bees, then returned to the hive to 'raid the fridge'. It was done at night in the cold, in classic skunk fashion. He did me a favor. I never did mess with skunks, but they got my respect that night, and from then on....
Now, if I could teach him to use a stepladder, I'd have less wasps around.....
Sounds like you got critters bigger than a skunk.

I've never seen hog damage that was only 1/2 inch deep, even with small hogs. I'd lean more toward Pepe Lepew and friends.

I've seen hog damage to yards that is just unbeleveable. Sidewalks rooted up, sprinkler systems pulled completely out of the ground, all sorts of damage. It always amazes the big city Yankee folks who move here that there is such a thing as wild hogs!  I know of at least one woman from NY who insisted on calling the Sheriff's Dept to report vandalism. She thought the local kids were  destroying her yard because she was Jewish.

We trap hogs sometimes, but discourage those who want us to for the sake of honesty. We always explain they will run out of money and patience before we run out of hogs to trap for them.
