bad thing about kansas, sport hunting of hogs is illegal.you have to own the property and get a permit beforehand.i dont think they would complain if a person shot one and left it lay.

Well then, Kansas will learn the hard way because they will multiply there like they do everywhere else.  States that have low feral hog populations would be very smart to enact aggressive policies that classify them as non game animals and pests and let every swinging dick kill them on site.

Florida is just like that, no season, except in state Managment Areas. Rest of state it is open season, no bag limit. I have two guns specificly for hog hunting, a 444 Marlin with a 2x tip off and a Simese Mauser in 45-70, express sights. The 444 with 300s and the 45-70 with 300s will dispatch a tusker in a flash, regardless of size. Boom - flop. With a handgun I carry two guns, a 30-30 XL and a 44mag Ruger Blackhawk OM.

Hogs love wet  palmetto swamp, shots are close and fast. Their nervous system is slow to tell them "hey you are dead" so a big bullet with lots of smashing ability is called for. First time I hunted hogs I asked the guide what would be the longest shot, he said "about 60" so I thought and said; "great, I have been practicing with my handguns at 50-100 yards." His reply, no, no, 60 feet!!! We shot 3 wild boar, one was 10 one was 15 and the other was 60, feet. Not one was cornered by dogs and they got real close, too close, before we ever saw them or knew they were there.

The states that regard them as cute little piggies will pay the price for ignorance. They are mean, tough, destructive, eat anything and they bread like rabbits.

I agree with big bore rifles and bad hogs. The big boar hanging on my wall above me as I type this fell in his tracks to a 300 grain Hornady HP handload from my 45-70..
He never took a step as the bullet smashed his shoulder, destroyed his heart and made its way through two feet of bone, grissle, meat and internal organs.
This aint your average sized pig though. He was a big bad dude in his day..:wink:Till he ran into my old lever action 45-70.

ks.does not  look at them as cute little piggies.they are trying to discourage people from releasing hogs to hunt.

Hogs are the only animal in Texas you can hunt with out a permit! they are that bad!, the Texas dept of Parks and Wildlife and the Texas dept of Agriculture has made a public request for hunters to kill every hog they see, the hogs are that bad they are doing millions in damage to game & crops, I'll bet it won't take long for kansas to get onboard and let everybody hunt them!

Doc

In Texas the est. the population to be over 5 Mil. and they are moving at a rate of 45miles per year to the North and West . I got this from a Parks and Wildlife notice a few months back and I do believe it to be true.

Was wondering where you got this from?  TP&W has maintained the population to be about 1.5 million and growing.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/nuisance/feral_hogs/

I saw a recent LA Times article about hunting hogs in east Texas and the article stated the estimated population was about 2 million which may be a little more current.

I was just interested in seeing where TP&W jumped their estimate up to 5 mill?

I would have thought that A&M might have some numbers regarding the pig plague that Texas has.Doc do you still work with the school teaching extension courses for ranchers and such about these destructive pests?I didn`t know if A&M kept in touch with you guys that graduated from its PHD programs regarding wildlife issues.

if the hunt is being provided free by the landowner then I don't think you'll be in for much $$$ wise.  In Texas you can get a five day hunting license for non game species for about $140 I think.  I really doubt Oklahoma would be much different, especially for a pest like hogs.  Best of luck and have a great time.

Here is a 175lb East Texas hog that Kyle shot with a 60 grain .223 behind the ear... He dropped like a ton of bricks.

i found out.  in oklahoma,as long as there is not a current firearm deer season and you are hunting on private land, there is no lic or fees required even for a non resident.
