Doc,is there any way to tell if a hog is dominant Russian boar or if its dominate feral hog ?I know the differences but with a mixture of the two,how do you know which he is more of?

Thats what I figured Doc.Lots of these yahoos up here always saying they killed a Russian and such when its just a plain old feral hog. It`d be nice if there was some way to tell em they are full of **** without a DNA test, but..anyways, appreciate the info bud..

And the"Rushuns" are a breed, not a seperate specie.
The domestic swine and the wild swine of Europe are the same genus and specie, Sus Scrofa, almost sounds like a social disease. ;D

Doc is right,
The only sure way to tell is a DNA test. However, I've had professional game breeders tell me that if the black hair along the back is gray or white tipped, then there is some Russian "blood" in them. It is a common characteristic of the Russians but again, it's not definitive.

Doc and Mountaineer, what would you fellas class this hog as being dominant of genetically just by seeing him?I think he is definately heavy on the Russian strain..

I would Perfer Hair,as i need at least 10 strands of it. But if it has been sprayed it might not be good. if you remove some hair I would stay take it from the back of the mount and mail it to me and I will run it.
it will take me about 3 days after I get it to have the test results .

Doc - I killed the boar in that picture about three years ago. The ranch to the south of us has been in the same family for about 100 years (about 25,000 acres). They told us that in the 70's they imported Russian boars to inter-breed with the feral hogs already running around and simply because they wanted to hunt them. They fully admit they had no idea how out of control they would get.

I have a customer that maintains a hunting plantation (3000 acres I believe) in southwest Georgia. Last year he told me that he had a problem with wild hogs tearing up the place and eating all the feed from the feeders. They put out traps and within a few months had hauled out over 350 hogs. It was now past 750. They killed one that day and dropped it off to me before I left. It was about 250 lb live weight.
I don't think there is much difference between a feral and a boar. It must be really hard to maintain a strain of boar with all the ferals.
I remember the first feral hogs I saw near my house. I was really surprised. They don't look much like domestic. It must be the cut out teeth and realy round, low shape of a domestic. Ferals get awful tall and are quite thin, they seem to weigh about 25% of a domestic the same hight. The 250lb pig I was given would have been a monster fattened out.
I bet they all bite the same. Tushes looked scarry to me.

In Texas the est. the population to be over 5 Mil. and they are moving at a rate of 45miles per year to the North and West . I got this from a Parks and Wildlife notice a few months back and I do believe it to be true.

| In CA we have Asians,Russian Cross & Razorbacks mixed in with domestics some are B&W,Red,all black, white, etc.,friends who've hunted the #1 big game animal in CA told me they judge the Russian swine by checking the snouts & tails the straighter the more Russian in them.I've never hunted them just Pecari tajacu in AZ when I was a student at the U of AZ.With my 2 newest centerfire rifles: TC Encore with a 20"Bullberry barrel in SW460mag and the Marlin XLR in 45-70 I may try some Family Suidae Genus Sus Species scrofa. Guys, not to sound like ours are worse, but we have a serious problem in North and North West Florida. It never gets cold enough here to bother them and they breed like rabbits. A friend owns 3 sections about 45 minutes from here and his corn fields look like an air strike occoured overnight. I have never seen anything like it. Holes 8-10 ft in diameter 2-3 ft deep. He has to run a dozer in the field so he can run a tractor. A group of guys from Tampa stopped by with 4x4 trucks and a catch dog. He allowed them to go after the hogs. Their hunt lasted about 30 minutes. Out of the woods, 600 pound boar on back of truck, catch dog cornered boar, dog went to doggie heaven, and they shot boar. Back to Tampa they went, never to return.
I have gone over to shoot the nasty bad actors but they only come around at night and after three nights of zip, we stopped. They came the night after we left. Dug up the fields just like they were before the dozer leveled them up. Now they will not go near a trap either. Trapped 17 in a week. Ah, the local meat processor will not take them any longer without a vet certificate. So we might need a front end loader, a big hole and claymores.
