Last year I got a picture on my trail camera that to me looks like a bobcat.  I've only had a couple of people agree with me most everybody else sees that picture tells me it's a Mountain Lion with a stub tale.

Could one of your wildlife biologist give me your opinion.

Here's the setup the trail camera is a nondigital film type camera with a high-intensity flash for further viewing distance at night.  The camera manufacturer recommends 200 speed film but the camera was shipped with 400 speed film so I used that instead.  The cat is about 15 feet from the camera.  The log the cat is standing on is about 6 inches thick.  The salt block in the background is about 30 feet away.  If you have any more questions just post them here and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Bill

Will Bill, in my opinion its a Lynx - Mt.Loin  cross breed, the reason for that is it looks to be big to be a lynx or bobcat and the markings on the front leg look to be that of a young Mt.loin and there are to look like turfs of the ears but not the jals that a lynx or bobcat would have .

the next question is do you have any other pic's of it ??? like a frontal or a on side shot??

Ok, to make a Judgement call here I sent it to a prof. I had in school and he thinks I am right in my judgement on this as he has seen a few crosses of Lynx and Mt.Loin in Wy.

So thats my opinion and it could be right or wrong .

That is the only picture I have.  I didn't have my camera set to take two pictures, but ever since then I've had my camera set to take two pictures.  The following spring my dad found these tracks out by their mailbox.  This is within 100 yards of where the cat picture was taken.  I know there's no proof that these tracks were made by the same cat but it is a pretty good coincidence.

Thanks for your input Doc.

No problem Doc.  The tracks are kind of hard to make out.

A cross between a Mountain Lion and a Lynx sound like the best explanation I've had yet.  Thanks:thumbs:  I got a new digital trail camera now so maybe next summer when I have it up  I'll get a better picture of him.

Well as you know WildBill we have both lynx and mountain lion up where we are. I got to watch a lynx for quite while a couple years ago. Your cat definately has the black on the ears but I can't make out the very long tuff of black hair they usually have protruding from the ear.

The tail should be shorter and black if it's a Lynx too but not case on your photo is it?

I know the lynx are even more protected than the wolf and I imagine the mountain lion is too.

I remember when I first saw lynx tracks up at my cabin. At first I thought "wolf" due to the size but they were somewhat blurry from all the fur they have down by their feet.

Those trail cams are kinda neat. I've seen some interesting stuff on them, and now I've seen an apparent lynx/mnt lion cross!!

Very neat WildBill

Well I checked the game manual and I don't see where a mountain lion in MN has any protection. But a mixed breed with a lynx??? Game warden would let you know WildBill.
