There are plenty of resident deer where I live. summer finds very high number and they stay till the last apple has fallen of my orchard. This is about 2 weeks before archery season. I have a small area 1/4 acre for a food plot.
Anyone know of a crop I could grow that would have a very late harvest. Because of the high deer density in this area. they could easily clear out 1/4 acre in 2 nights if the crop (like soy beans) give food too early. any thoughts? The perfect crop would be oak trees, but I really don't has the life expectancy to plant white oaks.
I'm in SW Pennsylvania, on a high ridge. soil is an acid clay, but some lime can help here. Pretty good rainfall for the north east, and moderate to cold winter. Good place for apple trees to grow. Even though I'm at the highest point in the county I've got a number of springs that require tile to drain.
Thanks for the advise. any thing else you can add would be appreciated.
I was thinking rape seed and clover. Turnips sound interesting, will deer dig them up or just eat the greens?
