DEAR DOCS: is it true that Armadillos carry leprosy??or is this an old wise tale?I hate the derned things. In the summer when I water my pecan, peaches, plums, pears and apple trees the damn things root under the watered trees and make a mess.I usually shoot em with a 22lr to get rid of them and pick em up to throw em away.If they do carry that I dont want to be handling the carcasses..

Signed: Confused Armadillo slayer in Texas..

First off here is a bit of info on the Dillo's

About the size of a terrier dog, upperparts encased in a bony carapace with large shields on shoulders and rump and nine bands in between; front feet with four toes, middle two longest; hind foot five-toed, the middle three longest, all provided with large, strong claws; tail long, tapering and completely covered by bony rings; color brownish, the scattered hairs yellowish white. There are 30 or 32 peglike teeth. External measurements average: total length, 760 mm; tail, 345 mm; hind foot, 85 mm. Weight of adult males, 5-8 kg; females, 4-6 kg.

Ok Timber to answer your question yes they carriers of Leprosy, but the chances of you contrating it are very low unless you are cleanning or eating them.

ARMADILLOS are used to study Hansen's disease (leprosy), a naturally occurring disease in this species. Scientists are using armadillos to test a new vaccine to help people who have Hansen's disease and to try to find ways to prevent it..

Ok here is a bit more info on the 9 band Armadillos,

Body Length: 15-17 in. Tail: 14-16 in. Weight: 8-17 lbs.

The Nine-banded Armadillo is a cat-sized, armored, insect-eating mammal. Similar in form to an anteater, the bony, scaled shell of the armadillo protects it from attacks by predators. Unfortunately, armadillos often fall victim to automobiles and are frequently found dead on roadsides.

A prolific digger, armadillos dig many burrows, as well as dig for food. Distribution is often determined by soil conditions, since the animal will not survive in areas where the soil is too hard to dig. Many other wildlife species use and benefit from these abandoned burrows.

Although occasionally considered a nuisance by home owners, the armadillo's habit of digging up lawns is driven by its appetite for grubs, which can also harm lawns.

Life History
Eats insects and other invertebrates. Skilled at digging for grubs. Occasionally eats berries and bird eggs.

Although breeding occurs in July, the embryo remains in a dormant state until November. Four young are born in a burrow in March. All four young, always of the same sex, are identical quadruplets and developed from the same egg. They even share a single placenta while in the womb. Armadillos are the only mammals in which multiple young form from a single egg with any regularity.

Habitat and Distribution
The armadillo is the state mammal of Texas. Originally native to South America, the armadillo now ranges as far north as Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Louisiana. Found in all but the western Trans-Pecos portion of Texas in a variety of habitats; brush, woods, scrub and grasslands.

From that article it seems like armadillos are both good and bad.    Do any of you guys who have them around have trouble with them?

GR,I usually shoot 5 or 10 a year.If the weren`t so destructive underneath my fruit and nut trees in the yard I wouldn`t bother them.I`ve spent a lot of time pampering the fruit trees in my yard and the pecans.I grafted some of the fruit trees myself, keep them irrigated and fertilized as well as sprayed for the endless abundance of pests that attack them.No way an Armadillo is messing up the feeder hairs on my root systems...:thumbs1:Its called 22lr pest control...

Last year when the family went to Springfield, Mo. to Big Cedar Lodge that Bass Pro Shop owns to stay a couple of days. I noticed as we got into Missouri, past St. Louis. I thought I noticed something weird killed along the road. I seen a couple more and thought they were armadillos but I didn't say anything so Chaunda wouldn't think I was nuts.

Well, I had to point one out to her and yep, it was an armadillo. I didn't have a clue (I was shocked) that they were that far north. How could they stand the winter? Well, thats the only experience with them.

God Bless,

Song Dog

Hey SongDog.They do range rather far north for sure. They are a very hardy and adaptable animal. With poor eyesight and not high on the intelligence scale it is amazing they have survived.I suppose the Spanish word they are named after is the key to their success.Armadillo in spanish means "man of armor".

During WWII, German POW's in Texas prison camps named them "Panzerschwine", guess what that means?

I understand the incidence of leoprosy in armadillos is very small and almost totally confined to S. Louisiana.

It is true that they can't see well. They swim like a fish. I caught a few, and they really hate being given a bath.

They have a habit of jumping up in the air when scared. Makes a mess of your car when you hit one. They jump up into the grill.

They must be related to the squirrels that wait until the car is over them to stand up, of course, that is fine, no damage to the meat.

doc. Last hunting season i saw a whitetail doe that had a tumor on the side of it face. i contacted my local game commision on what i should do. they told me to leave it alone. i thought that was kind of cruel. I have seen the deer several more times. thought i should kill it. but the season was not in for does at that time. Could this spread to other deer or to it's off spring. just wondering.  I just dont think it is right for the animal to suffer it sure looked in a bad way. I noticed it really had a tough time eating.

First, where in the head is it? and how big is it?  deer most are just  get these from time to time and Most are just ugly and non harmful to the deer. I have a Doe that had a spot on the under side of the jaw where she ate some cactus and its stuck in her throat and it doesn't seem to be a problem as she is fat and has a set of twins this year.

As for this being transfeded to her offspring without seeing it I can't really answer that, But I don't beleive it will be a problem.

Can you get me a Photo if her and lets see if its going to be something that needs to be taken out of the herd.

where are you at ,I may have someone that lives by you that can look at her and tell you more.

Doc,

They clean up pretty good, but it is a pain to bathe them. I did it so my kids could see an interesting critter up close. I turned it loose in the fenced back yard and fed it. It would come walking around us if we didn't move.

I have had a pet praire dog, a ferret, rabbits, lizards, frogs, toads, snakes, an aligator, chickens and ducks. Our pet white oak snake was named Tiny No Hips. I used him to teach the kids that snakes aren't slimy and how to tell poisionous from harmless.

I live in southwest va. the tumor is on the side of it face.  on the side of it. just under the ear. it is pretty big. You can see it on her from about 45 yards so you know it has got to be big. I am going to try to talk to a local game warden. i have become friends with one. This year if she comes close enough during bow season i will take her down. that is if she makes it that long.
