My dog, a lab & spaniel mix at 12 yrs old, is showing several signs of canine senility.  I have ruled out that the issues are from pain or disease. She has seperation anxiety, is awake and more vocal at night (out of confusion I guess), she has little interest in play and she is getting less responsive to commands or is unlearning them. I know she can still hear well enough and understands me better sometimes (I wonder if some of it is selective hearing).  I have heard that there are medications that can help (sometimes) for this but I wonder if they work much or at her age is it not realistic to expect relief from this problem??

I sometimes think my dogs have selective hearing....or are just ignoring me.  Has your friend had a change in diet lately?  Anyone new in the house(another pet)?

Twelve years old for a dog is like you turning 85-ish....would you want to go play?  I only hope I will, but I think I'd rather stay on the porch and just watch.  Let your friend enjoy the later years by taking it easy and enjoying the fall evenings that your getting!  Soon he/she will be enjoying the warmth of a nice fire and watching it snow.

It's very disconcerting when a beloved pet becomes confused and "not themself" any more. If you google "canine senility" you will find a lot of sites with much good info.

Here's a very interesting one...

Best of luck to you and your pal!

Actually the only change in her diet or routine is that she is being fed less and it has benefitted her by dropping her weight and she is getting around easier but the senility started before that.  I intend to let her take it as easy as possible but I have to find a fix for the barking and whining at night issue soon!  She can no longer sleep at my bedside because the stairs to the bedroom are too steep and too many for her to manage.

Scott, I might have asked you before, but do you still have folks up here and have you been up lately?

My parents live in Lebanon, Maine.  Have numerous relatives around Newfield, Sanford, Rumford, and others.....

I know you might not want to try this, but?  I got one of those bark eliminator collars, and the oldest learned pretty quickly.  All I need to do is make sure she sees it laying on the dresser......that equals quiet all night.
