Years ago, my Uncle Skip shot a 3-pt in the State of Maine(was a legal deer at that time), and to his dismay.....it wasn't a buck! This deer was an antlered doe!!
My questions:
How is that possible? I mean how can a female grow antlers?
Is it possible for this antlered doe to have had fawns? Her hormones must have been way out of balance....(I think).
Has anyone else ever seen/heard about this happening? And what was the odds that this is isolated?

Yep,I have heard it befor and seen one years ago,A doe with spikes.That is the only time I ever seen it but it does for sure happen.I`ll wait for our staff to add to this as I don`t have enough real education other than being in the woods a whole heck of a lot to explain it.I would guess it is definitely a hormonal thing like when a sex change woman starts taking testosterone and develops a beard and a deeper mans voice.
anyway,.MarkV,Mountaineer,have you guys ever seen one?

Ever see a bearded hen turkey? I shot one several years back.
I have no specific knowledge of how this might work in deer but I will tell you that hogs occasionally develop hermaphrodites (sp?) in these instances female hogs have portions of both genitalia. These females usually develop very powerful frames and are standouts in the show ring. Some breeders have tried to show them as females because of strength being a desired trait. The dead give away comes from the fact that their unusual genitalia, while normal in outward appearance causes them to urinate straight upward. The golden fountain is a dead giveaway and disqualifies them from competition.
In cattle twins born of both sexes usually result in the female (called a freemartin) having incomplete sexual organs. About 85% of females twinned with a male calf will be totally sterile.
I have heard of does with horns and bucks who never shed their velvet. In the latter case the bucks usually lack testes. RD

I've probably harvested about 100 deer in the last 12 years and never seen one. Never seen one anyone else harvested for that matter. I know it happens but it has to be pretty rare. We have seen some strage whitetails before, but never a doe with antler.
Talk about tits on a boar hog

I've heard of this also. Never seen one in person. If I remember right it is caused by hormones out of wack.

Yep, it's all about hormone imbalance. Testosterone is found in female mammals as well as males. You don't need testicles to produce it. However, the chain of hormones, including testosterone, and their interactions in antler development can occur in does and does occassionally. I don't have a good idea of what % of does do this but it is very very low.
They've even been able to grow antlers on parts of deer other than the head with the proper regimen of hormones and such.
If I can ever remember to get my dang references out I could give you some more hard information. Like I said before in the "Credibility Thread" I spend more time on habitat management than physiology and behavior. Still, I remember a few tidbits that pertain and will try and remember to post them when I ever remember to get out the textbooks.

Read in the hunting news about a guy in eastern washington that shot a big 4x4 mulie and when he went to gut it , was shocked to find out he was a she ,even called dept of fish and wild life to make sure that he was legal with his kill, they told him it met the antler requirements for a buck and he was ok.

i understand it is the presence of antler buds on the skull that makes a doe grow antlers.the same can be transplanted to another area on the deer and grow an antler there also.

Years ago IF&G changed the regs here. Since that time, they differentiate only between "antlered" and "antlerless" animals. They'll write in "spike" or "forked horn", but not buck or doe (for deer), bull or cow (for elk/moose). Hunters are required to leave the head naturally attached to the carcase, and/or to leave evidence of sex naturally attached to it. I guess they had too many does with antlers coming through.
I haven't looked at the sheep and goat regs. Don't know if ewes and nannies grow horns.
