... how the heck old do ya have to be to legally hunt in Arkansas?
I just watched a Yahoo News video telling of a 5 year old boy tree stand hunting with his grandfather and he killing a 445 lb. black bear. This after taking 3 deer the year before (that would make him 4) and they claim they started him shooting at 2 1/2 years old.
Is it legal for preschoolers to be hunting in that there state?  Follow up question ... if legal, is it smart to allow preschoolers to big game hunt?

It's pretty much a question as to whether or not the child can pass the Hunter Education test.
Do I think it's possible for a 4 year old to hunt with guidance? Yes. Is it right? I don't know. But this is Arkansas, and anything is possible.

Good point, SDB777. Begs the following question ... is a 4 year old even capable of reading and comprehending the questions on the hunters education test in order to pass it?
From what I understand 47% of the adults in Arkansas can't read. You expect me to believe this 4 year old can?
ok, that was completely inappropriate. i kid because i love.

looks like bea got the drop on this one. I would've suggested doing what he did, look at the regs.
Still it seems awfully young to me. I guess that's up to the adult taking the child, whether 4 or 14 being of appropriate age.
Personally, I feel that there are some 12 year old kids that are more responsible than some 21 year olds but I suppose somebody (i.e., the game law makers) has to draw an arbitrary line somewhere, just like they do for driver's licenses.

Wow. I'm ... suprised. A bit shocked. Confused.
Trying to connect the dots on how being with an accompanying adult (holding a valid hunting license) make it any more appropriate for a toddler to be big game hunting?
Something seems way out of whack with this one. I'm not sure if it's the fact that a 4 year old was legally killing deer last year or if it's the fact that a state sees this as being appropriate. The reporter in the news bit reporting on the kill seemed so proud of the whole thing and all I could think while I was watching it was, are you freak'n serious. That darn kid was probably watching Barney just hours before he climbed up into the stand with his grandaddy.
My boy's going on 12 weeks come Friday. I assure ya he's going to have every opportunity to hunt when we get to that point and if he so chooses but I certainly don't see it as some sort of race getting a child from diapers to the field killing something in one feld swoop. .
Glad MT has the sense to step in with some reasonable legal minimum hunting ages. Obviously, leaving it open for the adults to decide these things isn't the brightest of ideas. Course, that's my opinion.

I started Cody shooting at five,he was using my 22lr by six or so.I bought him a 22lr at seven,he got a little Ruger M77 not long after and killed his first deer when he was 11 or so.Its about ability and such.I don`t think a five year old has enough grasp on what he is doing to be big game hunting at that age...Just me maybe,I was turned loose early and hunted rabbits on my own when I was seven with a 410 shotgun but that was a different time.I didn`t have a computer or video games,so hunting and fishing at a young age was my past time.

Big game hunting as an 11 year old sounds very reasonable to me, Gene. There's been time to establish a level of responsibility. 4 year olds big game hunting sounds ... well, whatever the complete polar opposite of "reasonable" is, that's what a 4 year old big game hunter sounds like to me.

Agreed. I'm not sure I want my son to kill a larger animal that young. Will probably give him the option earlier than eleven, but 5 is a stretch.

Yep MarkV..I waited with my boy on killing a large animal to make sure he would understand and appreciate what he was doing.He did I am certain of that understand when he took that little bucks life,.He has turned into a mighty fine young hunter and I`d trust him to hunt beside me anywhere,I don`t think I`d put him on a Cape Buffalo charge or a big brown bear yet but his time will come.
I am all about starting a hunter early,shooting at an early age,small game hunting to build confidence,learn skills needed.,Squirrel hunting with my dad taught me how to slip through the woods as silent as possible.Skills I used later on in life.
I am with you fellas on this.I don`t think a 5 year old oughta be in that position.Ten years old,yeah maybe..but not at five.Hell he can`t even read the states game law manual yet..
More power to him and his grandpa on a good shot,but I still don`t think it is right..

I've seen individuals that take small kids hunting just to get their "free" tags. But if this was the case, the kid was well rehearsed in the interview. By "free" tags, I mean the Game and Fish book has four removable tags for use with young hunters under the age of 16, and these tags don't count towards the total tags given on the regular adult hunting license!
With three kids and two adults in the house, we could actually take a total of twenty deer without even applying for "extra" hunting. I don't even think I could add all those possibilities up without a calculator! Now do I need twenty deer in the freezer? Not all at once, but throughout the year in sure would help the food bill(and taste better then the crap with all the super growth drug in it).
Five would be stretching the limits on understanding that dead is dead. Most kids can't possibly know what the meaning of "dead" is at that time, and if they do? Great, maybe with their super understanding ability...they can come up with a cure for cancer!

I'm not going to say the kid hasn't killed the animals stated because some kids grow up quicker than other and this may be the rare exception. I started my son shooting at around four or five and he killed a few squirrels and and some jay birds but didn't kill his first deer until he was ten . Tn you have to be 10 for the Hunter Safety Course and you must have it before you can legally hunt big game. I'm not saying he wasn't cable of taking a deer at a younger age than Ten because in my opinion he could have but we keep it legal. I had the deer mounted for him. Went i grew up in the 50 and 60's i was hunting by myself at 10 years old with both 22 rifle and 12 ga shotgun. The shotgun was a H&R 12 GA with 30 inch full choke barrel. I kill a lot of squirrels and rabbits with that old shotgun. I do believe most kids in that time period were more mature and responsible than today.

The news or anyone else has mentioned what caliber weapon this lad was using. It takes a pretty good load to take a bruin of that size with one shot as they claim.
Could he possibly be that good at his age with shot placement using say a .243 youth rifle???
