Interesting timing...I'm just re-reading Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop. Seems there are always other projects ahead of knives, though. You might try Texas Knifemaker's Supply for your guard, if you aren't going to form it from sheet.http://www.texasknife.com/store/s-pages/TKS_MainframeStore.htm

Charley, I build a few knives but had never heard of Texas Knife. When I access their sight and begin to scroll down on a page it immediately shuts down my internet connection and installs a .log icon on my desk top. Anyone else have this problem? RD

Very nice knife, TG! I just bought a hunter Damascus blade and am fitting some mesquite wood handles with mosaic pins. It is my second such project. The first involved an old machete that I fitted with mesquite and stainless steel pins and lanyard tube.

How did you get that antler so shiny?

I'll post the picture of the hunter once it's finished.

Thanks chr and d2...
CHR, I used epoxy when I put the horn on.Used 1/8th inch welding rod for my pins and the epoxy to bind it.I got a little epoxy on the horn and it turned it shiny.I liked the looks of it so I put a thin later on the high spots of the antler..Looked pretty nice.I might do that again on the next one.I have a peice of big brass the mechanic out our work gave me.It was a wear bushing for something on a Caterpillar.I took my torch, heated it red hot and flattened it.Gonna use it for a handguard but haven`t gotten around to it yeat...Its fun making these things.I am starting another one with the same blade pattern for my bro John Urban..I`ll get some photos of it too.I am thinking of using a Mycarta handle on it and stainless steel hand guard..Maybe deer horn handle though.Something about a antler that just gives a knife character..

I agree on the antler comment, TG. BTW, have you ever carried or used a "Bird & Trout" type knife? It seems all they are is a smaller version of a skinner/hunter. I am currently looking for a blade that I can dress up with possibly antler and brass bolster.

Have you ever used this type of knife or know where I can purchase such a blade?

Hey CHR..I have never used one bud.I use a large and small CaseXX set for caping and skinning and a Kershaw Alaskan skinner or a Blackie Collins skinner for dedicated skinning.I know of the bird and trout blades.I looked at a few on different knife making sites. This one from Texas Knifemakers Supply in Damascus steel really caught my fancy..Check this out..purty!!!!!!!
