I bought a Spyderco "police" model back when I was a star-packer, long before BaliSong (aka Bench Made) bought Spyderco out and started making them. In fact, it was before they started stamping them "Police". The hilt is stamped "SPYDERCO AUS-6 STAINLESS" on one side and "SEKI CITY JAPAN" on the other. It's got about a half-inch drop point at the tip; the rest is serrated. It stays sharp just about on its own. I just touch up the half-inch part now and then.

Back in the day when Buck meant quality (or at least, American made utility) and all the bikers had brass-bolstered Buck folders, I aquired a cheap Pakistani "copy" of one for $2.00.  Still have it. One of the rivets fell out that holds the the wood insert on the left side of the handle in place, but the steel is easy to sharpen and holds an edge pretty well. Cleaned a lot of fish with that one. Still use it in the garage.

A while back I picked up a Lone Wolf folder (made in Wilsonville, Oregon) because it's "stocks" matched those on my Springfield Armory 1911A1. Haven't used it yet, but it might go hunting with me this fall.

For 32 years, my "carry" knife has been an A.G.Russell One-Hand Knife, made in his shop when it was in Springdale,Arkansas.I have worn the knurling off the thumbstud twice so far.It holds an edge like nothing I've ever owned.I think I gave $39.95 for it in 1976.

His catalog now has a mixture of knives from all over, but I'm pretty sure every one has the country of origin listed- no surprises.

Another good old American utility knife maker sending work to the Chicoms. Maybe they can make them as good, but I'd rather the money stayed in the USA. I've gotten to the point where I look to see where they're made. If it says China anywhere on the package or on the steel, then it's NO SALE. I have, however, considered buying one of the German Solingen knives, and I confess to owning at least one Victorinox Swiss Army Knife (the Fisherman model). I wouldn't consider myself a collector, but I have probably 25 knives of one sort or another. Some are marginally collectible, but nothing spectacular.

When I buy a knife, I have a particular use in mind for it. Maybe it'll never get used to that or anything else (hence a rather high percentage of my "collection" is NIB. Many of the little folders by Schrade and Victorinox have done yoeman's service on fisihing trips. I couldn't begin to count the number of trout, bass, and even salmon that I've cleanded with them. Same goes for an old Rapala folder - the kind with the ring near the hilt of the blade that you twist to lock it. That knife can take and hold an edge like noboday's business and has dispatched hundreds of squawfish (now politically corrected to "Northern Pikeminnow" in its day. I have a couple of Buck folders that are good camp knives, but I've never used them. My ex-wife bought me a Buck Kalinga 10 years or so back - never carried it in the field, although it looks good and rides well on my SAA revolver rig. My dad left me his Case folding fishing knife which shows signs of having been sharpened on a grinding wheel. It has a single cutting blade on one end and a scaler/disgorger tool on the other. I remember him using that knife to clean fsh almost 50 years ago.

I wonder how long it will be before some fool decides we need knife control laws, collector licensing, bans on automatic knives (assault knives?). I've managed to contain and control mine just fine without any help from the friendly folks in DC.
