| I`d say for an otc knife Boker is hard to beat.What do you fellas think is the best hunting knife besides custom knives.?

The best knife i have found for hunting is the Cold Steel Master Hunter. This is the one knife i carry when hunting out west. The best field dressing knife is the Wyoming Knife. These two are my pick and what i carry in the field.

I have the folding Kershaw called the Vapor 2 , designed by Ken Onion. More of a personal pretection knife than for hunting.

Throw all those knives away and order one from Junior Smith in Kansas for $65 includes a super quality sheath, and shipping. I guarantee you wll never buy another hunting knife and will pass that one on to your grandkids.
About 5 inch or so blades. Deer horn handle. Each one is made uniquely. He will grind for left or right hand use. When you get one. It's so sharp that it will scare you. It will last through at least 3 elk before touching it up
I have seen and handeld alot of +$200 knives and his tops them

bea175. I'm not that computer literate as to know how to post photos.
You might go over to BSB and ask Spotshooter to post one. He has one and a few othe guys. You might go to the Knife section on BSB or 24 hour campfire and do a search of E.J. Smith and find one.
I have recomended these and always said I would buy any knife someone bought and was not satisfied with. I have never had to take up on the offer. E.J. Smith is an old Kansas cattle rancher in his 70's and makes these knives as a hobby. You have to catch him early in the morning or later in the evening, but not past 8 PM

I've used everything from a box cutter to an $85 custom blade to field dress and butcher whitetails.
In all honesty, one knife is about as good as the next IF the following criteria are met:
1. Good steel
2. Proper mfr. set edge
3. Right size for the job
However, I tend to keep my old crappy Schrade and Buck knives on me while I'm hunting. Shrades tend to sharpen up nice but lose their edge quicker, while buck knives are a pain to sharpen but hold a good edge.
For day to day I just keep my standard old Leatherman on me at all times. Handy little thing from crimping blasting caps to adjusting the slot turrets on a scope.

Saddlesore, I agree they are very good knives and easy to sharpen compared to any BUCK knife made after 1980 (stainless bucks suck) I own there of those knife's you mentioned. Actually I gave one to my son out of state as a keepsake to use on hunts.
I also have a couple of custom made Richards knives, the are sold down at Silver Dollar City, Branson Missouri in the Ozarks. One is a skinner and the other is a real Bowie boot knife. I have shown many people the quality of a Richards Bowie, simply by throwing it at a steel 55 gal drum. It cuts through that steel like a knife going through hot butter.
The best over the counter knives I have found, are the Gerber and Kershaw knives! Both brands seem to hold and edge and are are not a 4 hour job to sharpen either. The old Double X Case knives used to be great for the money but then along came stainless and those knives I rank with Buck.

| I have two knives that I would like to donate to a serviceman/woman in Iraq or Afganistan. They are: Boker Applegate-Fairbairn single edge w/ kydex sheath, and a Cold Steel SRK, also with kydex. Both blades are 6"and are new-unused. Could someone post an address where I could send them for distribution?

3006,the blades arrived bud.They box was laying on my bunk when I got in today.I will find a good loving home for em.Many thanks for doing that,the level of support for guys over here from fellas at the HB and BSB has been amazing.It goes to show that the greatest guys in the world are hunters,shooters,outdoorsmen and I think a majority of them hang out right here and at the BSB.

My everyday carry knife is a Buck 110 I have had since sometime in 70's, it is used for everything. For hunting, I carry the buck and either one of my shorter K-bars or a cold steel, whichever I pick up first.
I collect knives also, not as many as old Mortis, but ones that interest me.
I don't carry it, but one of my favorite knives is an old case 3 blade folding pocket knife that belonged to my grandfather, no tellin how many hogs that knife has stuck.

| I suppose you'll all laugh at this but my kids bought me an Imperial folder, made in Ireland, back in the mid 80s. It's got about a 4 inch blade and a nylon/plastic handle. I've used it for over 20 years to field dress every deer I've shot, most of the deer my boy shot, and a few for others along the way too. I bet it's done somewhere between 30 and 40 deer. Takes a nice edge with little effort, edge lasts for dressing a couple of deer, and it cost about $4.50 when new. I've cut deer from the sternum all the way to the throat with it and even split the pelvis on a yearling a time or two. It was good and tight until this year when I loaned it to one of the guys in the crew and he tried to split the sternum on a big buck with it. He was jerking it up and down trying to split the ribs when I called a halt to the process. Now the main pin is getting sloppy. Is it the best OTC knife out there? Hell no! Is there a better one for the $? I doubt it. RD

| Anyone ever use an Olsen knife made in Howard City, Mi? I have 2 that are over 30 years old that I use every year - a 3" and a heavy 4". Don't kinow what kind of steel is in the blades but they sharpen easier than a Buck and really hold an edge.
