Most of my scopes have 40mm obj  and I was looking at buying a new one with a 50mm obj.  Is there any reason why one would be better than the other?

50 would gather light better but would require taller rings!

I'm not a big fan of 50mm scopes for hunting.  Target or varmint shooting is different.  Can you work with a compromise?  I have a couple of 42mm or 44mm which I think is pretty workable.
