The .220 Swift barrel in my #1 ruger .220 Swift is 1:14 and anything above 60 gr in bullet weight does not stabilize and the accuracy is challenged to say the least. 55 gr - 60 gr gets it done but it favors the lighter bullet and with such the accuracy at 600 yds get iffy (that means poor).
I'm building a .220 Rocket with a 1:8 twist with the intent of shooting a 77 - 90 gr bullet.
Has anyone had experience with the Rocket in the faster twist barrel? What did you end up with as the optimum load.
Thanks
Tom

I have an original rocket in 1/14, a swift in 1/10 and a 22-243 Middlestead with a 1/9. In my experience its hard to improve on the grand old swift, at least up to 60 grain. My preferred load in the 22-243 is 65 Sierra and a healthy charge of H4831ssc or IMR 7828. Fast, flatter than Kansas and Loud.

Deerdog did you ever have a chance to to chronograph any of them? Ya I agree the Swift is a sweet round. Lots of crows saw there maker with that one.
Working on some loads now for the Rocket. I've run some 77gr on top of 31.5 gr Varget at 2900 but there is room for more. Pretty mild.
I appreciate the info

My Weatherby Rocket is a 24". It will better the standard Swift by about 100 FPS with most loads, none of which have been pressure tested, but are completely safe in my gun. I would love to know the pressure, but will not attach a strain guage onto a collectible. I have (at a past time) attached the computer to the 22/243 and loaded it as far as I could go and stay under 60000PSI. It will push the 65 sierra from the 26" pipe at 3600.

do you remember what powder you got the 3600 with?
I just finished loading 10 each 33.5gr, 34.1gr, and 34.6gr Varget with 69gr hpbt noslers. Estimating 3150-3250. These are the first .220 Swift cases not yet fire formed. I'd like to get a little more out of them but not sure is Varget would do adding another 2 grs.
Ill have to recheck my manual and see where it tops Varget off at. I used to shoot IMR 3031 in my Swift at about 3600 but the 1:14 stopped doing great at 60gr. Seirra.
If you recall let me know what powder you were loading
thanks

My preferred coal is H-4831ssc. Watch the pressure signs closely as high energy small bores jump very quickly at the top of the pressure scale.
Good Luck and Good shooting!

I shot it today (the .220 rocket) at 200 yds.
first 20 rd group .576" with a 75gr hornady moly w/32.5 gr Varget
second 20 rd group .375" using 69 gr Nosler 33.6 Varget
I'll shoot the 77 gr sierras with the same load as the 75 gr Hornady and see what happens.
The difference in average vel. between the 2 loads was about 51fps at 3033 avg between the 2 probably a little too slow for 600 yds and if the wind is blowing its too light. Need to work up an 80 grain load.
so far it is doing good.
