Is the 308 Ackley Improved much of a improvement? Something im considering doing with a 308. Or is it just like puttin headers on a engine meaning it helps but so little you can notice? or is its advantages easier loading? What do you guys know about this?

You won't gain much going AI in the 308 Win.. The big gains in going AI, are when you have a cartridge with lots of body taper, or an extra long neck. As you increase case capacity quite a bit in those cartridges.
For those cartridges that don't have lots of body taper or a long neck, if you AI them, they "mostly" make their gaines by the owners pushing pressures of their reloads "higher" than the factory cartridges did in the first place.

MontanaShooter,
I spent time with Ackley as a young man. With all of his improved cartridges one of his main concerns was extending the life of the brass. Back then brass was not so easy to obtain so extending its life was important.
I for one am a great believer in Ackley cartridges. I own several and the latest is the 450 Ackley which I use. Just my two cents.

I have read on another forum that the AI cases can allow the handloader to use a somewhat slower powder, but this is best done in a longer barreled rifle. The gain is lost in a shorter barrel.
Any views on this?

Some of the AI cartridges were a big improvement, but .308 and 30-06 weren't two of them. Case life has always been good with these two cartridges too, so even that isn't a good reason to go AI with them.
Yes, a longer bbl will take advantage of slower powders, but there just isn't much improvement to take advantage of. Personally, i don't think they are worth the time or trouble, in those two cartridges.
In all the hours i visited with Ackley on the phone and with him in his shop, he never mentioned much about his AI cartridges or that his aim was to extend case life. We talked at length about many things, but he just wasn't focused on that subject, even though i brought it up more than one time.

When I decided to re barrel my Mauser I decided to go with a 280 Ackley, only because I wanted a 7mm (second choice was a 6.5-284) of some kind a buddy of mine has a 280 AI and likes it so after reviewing bunches of reloading data this is the round I settled on. Of all the ackleys the only one that seem to really work is the .257 Bob,280 Rem, and the 338-06

Bandit, I agree. Of the several AI cartridges I've messed with, the most worthwhile is the .280 Imp. Also, Jim Carmichael's wildcat on the .260 Rem is proving to be a good one, though not strictly an "improved" round in the usual sense.

I didn't find the .338-06 to gain much when "improved", at least not in the two i've tried. I think the reason many folks thing AI'ing the 30-06 or the 280 Rem., is because those cartridges are under loaded in the first place. Then someone comes along, AI's the cartridge, loaded it to a much higher pressure than factory, and thinks AI'ing it did the trick. DM Last edited on Tue Jan 5th, 2010 02:52 PM by DM
