Any one building a Wildcat rifle or have one in the works? My next rifle is a .17 Rem, not a wildcat but one Ive always wanted. After that I`m thinking about a 6mmm-284 or maybe a 22-284.I already have the dies for a 22-284 as well as Max`s load data for his rifle.Rifle components could be duplicated very closely. His targets are extremely impressive......Might as well give it a try I guess.
Lets hear what you have on the burner...

Not really a wildcat anymore because of A-Square, but I'm building a .338/06.

Besides working on my 8mm Grizzly that I started last year only to be knocked out of testing by a torn rotator cuff, I am working on an Encore in .243AI.

It is a EABCO custom barrel, 26" 1 in 8" twist for shooting heavy bullets in the 105gr. and up. I am just fireforming cases now but hope to get them all done this week if the weather helps.

Had a 250 AI built for my hunting pistol Encore

Also been thinking of having built a 19-223 by Calhoon or I was playing with some 221 brass and necked a couple up to 25 cal but not sure if enough case capacity to fire them off well.

I was just thinking the other day I have a couple of 105 howitzer shells thought about necking them down to 22-250, getting the chamber right may be a problem and I think recoil may be an issue also.

Thank-you for the compliment Timberghozt.

sglshotkw, very nice Encore pistol. Who made your barrel? I should have bought my Encore in the handgun form as I could have had the best of both worlds with the T/C.

My barrel was made by On Targetr Technologies http://www.ottllc.com/

I have 3 of his barrels now (2 Encore and 1 Savage Striker) the best chambers around in my opinion

sglshotkw, I have heard of OTT and was planning on using them for a 6.5mm project I want to do in the future. I am hearing a lot of good reports and wouldn't hesitate to have my chamber done by EDM. I had a custom die set made by Hornady and that is how they are making their dies.

Well,  I have several irons in the fire currently.  First off and pretty much ready to roll is my 224 Allen Mag.  I have it built and have done some testing but got the neck to tight and do not want to turn necks so I am waiting on a neck reamer to open it up to the proper dimension so no turning is needed.

On the left are two 22-270 WSM rounds ready for fireforming, in the middle two formed 224 AM cases and a 22-250 AI on the right for size comparision.

Here is the rifle, trued Rem 700, 27" Lilja 1-7 3 groove and HS Precision varmint stock.  The 224 AM is really far to large in capacity for any conventional 224 bullet weights.  Even the 80 gr pills are to light for this case capacity so Richard Graves, owner or Wildcat Bullets made me up some of his 100 and 107 gr ULD RBBTs.   During intial testing it looks like 3400 fps will be reachable with these bullet weights.

This round will be totally suitable for game up to deer.  The main design purpose of the round is to give the coyote hunter a single rifle that will offer 0 to 800 yard reach and and not destroy pelts at closer range impacts and do so in a sub 10 lb rifle with low recoil.

Next up will be my 510 Allen Mag, other end of the spectrum with this big girl.  This is a 50 BMG case basically improved.   Case capacity will be roughly 45 gr larger then the standard BMG.  Again, not the post practical of rounds but this will be an experiment in flat out Horse Power.  I am looking to drive a 750 gr bullet to a full 3000 fps in a 35" barrel.  Better yet, an 835 gr at 2800 fps and a 1000 gr ULD RBBT to 2550 fps.

The rifle is will be based on an Armalite AR-50 receiver and stock with a Liljs 1.750" straight cylinder 35" barrel fitted to it.

Here is a pic of the receiver compared to a long action Rem 700, a bit bigger!!!

I have everything to assemble this rifle except a set of pilot bushing of the proper size to fit the bore for chambering and crowning.  Once they get here I will assemble her and start abusing myself!!!

After that I am also going to be designing a much more practical 50 cal round designed for tactical and match use.  The 50 BMG 1000 yard match shooters generally load a 750 to 800 gr bullet to 2450 to 2550 fps for best accuracy and consistancy.

My 50 Allen Bench Rest will match these numbers but do it with 60 to 70 gr less powder and in a much smaller case which will work at much higher chamber pressures then the 50 BMG.   As such it will burn much cleaner and offer more consistant velocities for extreme range consistancy.

Also, the 50ABR will be able to be chambered in receivers such as the BAT Model M so the receiver alone will be a full $1000 cheaper then a BMG receiver.

Should be interesting, that will come out this summer.  Also getting ready to design my 375 and 458 Allen Magnums as well, both based on the 338 Allen Mag necked up to 375 and 458.

Staying busy!!

Kirby Allen(50)

I also have another project going besides the 8mm Grizzly and .243AI. It is a .338-06 JDJ with a new SSK barrel. So far I have fired a few rounds through it to break-in the barrel and hope to get out and start testing as soon as I get more cases fireformed.

Kirby, your .224 Allen is pretty cool! I load for the .25 WSM and also use .270 ESM cases to form.

How is the overbore necking down to .22 caliber? I have had very good results with RL-25 and Retumbo with my overbore. My 8mm Grizzly is based on a 404 Jeffery's case. In testing so far, I have beaten easily the 8mm Remington Mag. I have 2 other versions I plan on building a .375 Grizzly and a 416 Grizzly as soon as I find a few actions.

As expected the 224 AM is really overbored for this bore diameter.  As such, the only real viable bullets to use are the very long and heavy Wildcat 100 and 107 gr ULD RBBTs.  With these bullets the round actually performs quite well but you have to use powders such as WC872 or the new H-US869.   Any stick powders will result in powder bridging with this little monster.

To give you an idea of the length of these 22 cal bullets, check this out:

That is a 7mm 140 gr Accubond on the left and a 160 gr 7mm Accubond on the right.  The skinny guy in the middle is the 100 gr ULD RBBT wildcat Bullet.  Its actually a few thou longer then the 140 gr bullet!!!

BC is in the .600-.625 range with this bullet and with a velocity potential around 3400 fps it will make the trajectory of a 30-378 look a little silly, just have to finish testing to see where she performs the best.

I think your 25-221 would be an excellent little wildcat. I have about 25 years experience with the .256 Win Magnum an it is one of my all time favorite rounds. In some ways your 25-221 is just a rimless version of the .256 with a little bit more capacity maybe. I think you would be very happy with it. The .256 was in a 10" Contender barrel and became my favorite. I was also shooting a .30 Herret 14" and a 22 K Hornet which were also fun but the .256 was just such a balanced little round. In the end it was a pain to form cases for (MUCH harder than the .30 Herret) but still worth the trouble. I hope you build your 25-221. Unfortunately all mine were sold at a very bad time in life.

Lets revive this one and bump it up.

I'm having Jim Hart build me a 243 Ackley Improved,on a Remington 700 short action, with a Jewel trigger and holland heavy lug. He'll mount a light Varmit barrel,

1.200" for 4"then straight taper to .875 @ 26"and install a Vais muzzle break, then pillar bed it in a Holland ,wood laminated heavy Varmit stock.Barrel and muzzel break will be straight contour,SS bead blasted, action and bolt matte.Metal trigger guard matte or SS bead blasted.Leupold 2 piece bases and Leupold 30mm rings, both Matte as will the scope.(no final decision on scope, but getting close). I wont see this new toy till Feb-Mar.

I have received the 240 Laser gun, the dies and formed brass, including the new unfired 280 brass.

The 240 Laser is similar in looks only, to a 280 AI necked to 6mm. It is a 6mmx280 with the body blown out, sholder moved forward .250 inches and the shoulder angle changed to 45 degrees. It can not be made from 06 brass without having brass that is too short, so it is not a 6mm x 06.

I have loaded up some 100s with 4831 as I do not have any H-870 left and only a wee bit, about 1/4 pound, of 8700 which is same, same. The 8700 would move the 85s out at about 4,100 fps. I am going to use about 20 of the 100s to get the scope centered and the barrel broken in with sweet shooter, as is my practice with all of my guns.

The gun has not been shot since about 2002. I had the gun setting in the corner with the bore filled with Shooters Choice for the last two weeks. Crud poured out, like black India Ink, without any chunks, so I got the old copper disolved in total. With a tight patch, the jig now spins the patch to reveal a 1-8.5 or 1-9 twist barrel.

The gun is a pre 64 M-70 Action, with stainless guncoat, a Kreiger 28 inch SS barrel and a 3 inch long Shrewed style muzzle break. The trigger is standard M-70 with a 1.5 pound crisp let off, the mounts (rings and bases are Warne) the glass is an old 4x16x56 Hakko MPZ (Military & Police) tactical mill dot. It is said this gun has shot 4.5 inch groups at 1,000 meters with the Berger 105s so we will see, the proof is in the pudding.

We are now getting close to a range apointment. I do understand that this beastie migh be some what tougher than the 6.5x06 for muzzle blast. The 6.5x06 is just like the 264 Winny, it will clear a range in short order, especially with a max load of H-322 and an 85gr HP at 3,800. Ear bleed city.....

I bushhogged a place on a hill at the farm to make a 500 yard range. The impact area is down a power line and across a creek, into a facing hill side. So we are getting close. Hum, it would be real interesting to plant a food plot on that hill side. Ah, first things first.

Best,

Ed
